Paul L. Mariani
May 25, 1929 - July 2, 2009
Paul L. Mariani, 80, passed away on July 2, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Paul was born in Stockton, California on May 25, 1929 to Josephine and Giosue Mariani. Paul graduated from Edison High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After earning a business degree, he joined his father in the family business, Mariani's Men's and Boy's Clothing, established in 1917. Paul worked 6 days a week to build an enduring Stockton landmark.
In 1958, Paul married Rita Picetti and celebrated 40 years of marriage, before Rita passed away in 1998. Paul is survived by 5 children, Julie Dougherty (Kevin), Lisa Dixon (Dan), Deanne Garibaldi (Mark), David Mariani (Claire) and Gina Guzman (Don) and his 13 grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his sister, Angie (Joe) Ratto.
Paul, the devoted family man, enjoyed fine food and wine, cigars and quality time spent vacationing in Lake Tahoe with his family and friends. Paul was committed to promoting Italian culture in California as a founding member of the Pacific Italian Alliance, the Italian School of Language, the local chapter of Liguri nel Mondo and the Mangia Mangia Club of Stockton. "Pablo" was also a key promoter and developer in downtown Stockton's redevelopment and long time friend to the Mexican American community. My sympathies to the Mariani family... Mr. Mariani sold me my first classic Navy Blue Blazer and a pair of matching pimp socks (ca. 1969)... They made me look older than I was so I wore them to Carol Doda's on Broadway in San Francisco and they let me and my friends in... My prayers are with you all.

My deepest sympathies to the Mariani family and the entire community as we lose yet another beautiful soul of the generation that had the vision and courage to act - Those that had the work ethic to build and inspire - caring for the community as well as anticipating the needs of others as tho they were family.
Among them - Gene Calcagno and
Fred Malpasso - May God Bless those left who include Remo Canepa and Ray Baglietto to name two. God Bless you all and give your comfort.

My memories of Paul are rich with energy and wit. We shared time together on the Pacific Italian Alliance board and at Gian's for lunch. He was the "go to" guy for our wine and always helped put the food on the table at events.
It was always possible to have a good argument with Paul. He did not easily change his mind, but he listened and responded with good humor. I was particularly attentive when he talked about business; he had a great reserve of practical knowledge. I also appreciated his love of his wife and family. He had his priorities straight!
Paul cultivated friendships and his friends will miss him; but he will also be remembered. I will not go up to the wine bar at an Italian event or eat my lunch at Gian's without expecting him to walk up and grab me with his strong hands. I hope such memories and more sustain his family in these difficult days. He was indeed a great fellow! Bob Benedetti

Julie, Lisa, Deanne, David and Gina,
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you and your family. Paul was a wonderful family man and friend. There wasn't a time that when we where visiting my parents and we came to dinner at Julie's that Paul didn't make Shelley and I smile and laugh at anything he said. He will be missed, but I am sure he is at peace now that he is with Rita.

As my boss for over 25 years, and my father's even before that, I had the priviledge of knowing Paul for more than two-third of my life. I and my family are very sorry for his passing, and feel a great loss. It just won't be the same at the store without him, but I think he would want us to be strong and carry on. Always with quality work and high standards that he represented. Our prayers are with you family during this sad time.
