Pearl Stevens Obituary

Pearl Ellen (Snow) Stevens

Pearl Ellen (Snow) Stevens was born in Green County, Illinois on September 3, 1911. She passed away on January 4, 2009. After living on farms in Missouri and Arkansas, she and her mother and three brothers arrived in Everett on the morning of June 18, 1924. They had ridden on the Empire Builder from Chicago. Her father and brother, Scotty, had come on a previous train. One of Mother's fondest memories of the rice farm in Arkansas was the delivery of goods by barge to the family dock and receiving an orange and a bag of hard candy for Christmas.
Mother grew up in the Riverside neighborhood and attended North Junior and Everett High School. She was very athletic in high school and had the letter sweater to prove it. She married Ivan Stevens on January 13, 1934. They were married 59 years before he passed away in 1993. She retired from the Snohomish County Treasurer's office in the summer of 1977. Her position was Vault Supervisor in charge of descriptions and sending out property tax statements. She had previously worked in the office at J.C. Penny.
She was an excellent seamstress and cook, an arts and crafts person specializing in ceramics, flower arranging, holiday decorating and party planning. My sister and I always had a new handmade outfit for the first day of school each year, many in between and a new Halloween costume every year. Mother was a great collector - of people, pets and pretty things. Mother was a member of the Twilight Chapter of Eastern Star and Amaranth, worked on many committees and dinners and taught us planning by getting us involved with her projects.
Our mother and father enjoyed traveling and visited Europe twice, once aboard a cruise ship on the Mediterranean. They also took many car trips and bus excursions throughout the western United States and eastern seaboard.
Pearl will be missed by daughter, Maureen Stevens; daughter, Patricia (Clifford) Overturff; nieces and nephews, Carolyn Snow, of Marysville, Washington, Gayle (Larry) Green, of Coulee Dam, Gloria (Jack) Holmdahl, of Spokane, Elsie (Don) Farr, of Kent, Steve Snow, of Wenatchee, Rick (Clea) Pryor, of Coulee Dam, and Butch Pryor, of Coulee Dam; and a multitude of grand, great-grand and great-great-grand nieces and nephews from Everett to South Africa. Mom was Auntie Pearl to the first generation and Nana to the rest. In her later life she was closest to the great-grands, Tia, Vinny and Tyler Snow.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan; four brothers, Elmer Pryor, Scotty Pryor, James Snow and Ira Snow; nephews, Michael Snow and Jim Snow; and grandnephew, Vincent Snow.
We would like to say a very special thank you to Maria McNamara, mother's caregiver, for her help and compassion over the past eighteen months.
Our parents always had a room for one more - family or friend, human or animal. They offered a safe haven for all of us when we needed it. Now they have one of their own.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2009, at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett with public visitation starting at 9:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Sarvey Wildlife Center, 13106 148th Street N.E., Arlington, WA. 98223. (360) 435-4817.

I have many fond memories of your mother working at the Treasurer's office. I worked at the PUD and got legal descriptions from her for easements that I obtained for the PUD many years ago.

Patty and Maureen, I remember your parents from all of our square dancing at Fidelity and Kellog Marsh granges and the parties at your house. Your mother always kept us well fed. It was a long time ago and I remember those times with great fondness. What a privilege for you to have had the company of your mother for so many years.
