Peter Maier
Peter and I met at the Corning Y about 35 years ago when we both worked for Corning Incorporated in Corning, NY. The early 1990s found us sharing the driving to North Carolina to attend one of the early Merlefest Music Festivals near the hometown of Doc Watson and his son Merle. On the way down I remember wanting to drive more so that Peter could continue to play almost any song that I requested on his harmonica. We tent-camped nearby with a growing group of friends for many years where the fireside conversations where always enjoyable, wide ranging, and positive. I remember that someone once brought a mandolin and Peter asked to hold it. He had played a ukulele before and thought the tuning was the same so he was able to accompany any fireside song that someone wanted to sing. I felt that we were fortunate to be with someone so talented and willing to share with us.
At work Peter used his engineering and business skills to evaluate companies that Corning was thinking about buying. Teams audited their finances, production processes, business plans, fixed assets, human skills, competitors, and strategic approaches to growing their business. In another job he directed Risk Management which included the security of intellectual property, legal protection, self-insurance, and the Corning Archives. His analytic abilities were awesome but he also could cut to the heart of a complex discussion by summing up what had been said and what the implications were for the group to go forward. He was eternally curious about everything and everybody, but especially about those with special needs. And he was always willing to lend a hand when asked.
We also shared an interest in sailing so often discussed the finer points which I never really ever grasped. Good thing we sailed on different lakes. We also attended Cornell Theater events with our spouses where Cindy summed up the reviews during dinner and Peter kept the analysis alive the following week until I think he was satisfied that we had enjoyed the event. Mutual friends, Kay and Jim Pepper, anchored discussions about skiing, sailing, racing, instrument making, cabinet making, and music. The Peppers often hosted jam sessions in their home with interesting musicians and a bunch of us groupies there to sing along. But one day we were shocked to learn that Peter had suffered a stroke. Shortly after I found out how a very determined Peter could master the required rehab tasks and reorganize his life while working relentlessly on walking and speaking. Speaking was really pivotal because Peter used language with precision and was furious that he was having trouble getting the right words out of his mouth exactly when he wanted. From watching him I learned that amazing progress was possible when a determined man simply persisted, adapted, and finally learned to recover his fretboard and picking skills. Music was back and we all celebrated.
