Philip Moran Obituary

Philip David Moran, 87
1937 - 2025
Lynn - Philip D. Moran of Lynn, 87, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, after a short illness. He was the son of Margaret and J. Francis Moran of Lynn, and the beloved husband of Carole A. (Regan) Moran, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, Phil graduated from St. Mary's High School and the College of the Holy Cross, earned an EdM from Salem State College, and taught at Callahan School and Lynn English High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1966, later earning a JD from Suffolk University Law School. His legal career began in 1968 as House Counsel for Viatron Computer Systems, followed by a partnership at Kane & Moran of Lynn. From 1974 to 1978, he served as an assistant district attorney for Essex County before founding his own law firm in Salem, where he lived and practiced law for nearly forty years. He was especially proud of his pro bono work for vulnerable children and his admission to the U.S. Supreme Court Bar.
A lifelong advocate for the unborn, Phil was a founding member of Massachusetts Citizens for Life, a board member of National Right to Life, and president of the Pro-Life Legal Defense Fund. He also held civic and church roles, including general chairman of Maynooth College's bicentenary committee, member of the Boston Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, chairman of the City of Salem Conservation Committee, and Salem Election Commissioner. He was a member of the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta from 1996 until his passing. He was also a lector and Eucharistic Minister at Immaculate Conception Church in Salem, where he and his wife were longtime parishioners.
Phil received numerous honors, including the Ignatius O'Connor Pro Life Award, the Gold Medal of St. Patrick from Maynooth College, the Massachusetts Family Institute Citizenship Award, a Leadership Award from the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the Thomas More Award from the Pro-Life Legal Defense Fund.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children Maura Moran and her husband John Madron of Oxford, England, and Philip David Moran, Jr. and his wife Nicole of Gloucester, and his only granddaughter Alexia Moran of Gloucester. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Germaine McManus of Lynn and many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph Moran and Daniel Moran.
Phil will be remembered for his gentle wit, sharp intellect, and deep love of the ocean. His passion for photography earned him the nickname "King Kodak" and several photography awards. Above all, he will be known for his kindness, generosity, and devotion to his family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home on Monday, May 26th from 4-8pm. The Funeral Mass will follow on Tuesday, May 27th at 10am at Immaculate Conception Church in Salem, with the burial immediately following at Swampscott Cemetery.
