I grew up in Ebenezer. Dick and my mother were cousins. I remember the times the neighborhood kids would be hanging out in Dr Jim's back yard as he had a swimming pool, the only one in the neighborhood. "Doc Oc, as we called him, short for Dr Octopus as it seemed like he had 8 arms to scare us with, loved to terrorize us. You never knew when he might jump out from behind a bush or even out of a tree! Those were the good old days.

Mr. Ehinger helped me put my life on the right track. I came to school and even made Merit & Honor roll. He made me see I could do it and nothing was out of reach when you tried.

Mr, Ehinger, you were one of my favorite teachers at Riverside. I never cut your class, because it was always so interesting.

I remember one class in particular, you got a little emotional because you had to put your dog of 15 years down. That was the first time I ever saw a teacher show emotion. I knew then, you were passionate about everything you did.

Barb, Andrea, & April,

Dick truly was a great man who helped others to see life in a real way. He helped us to see ourselves honestly and helped us to live our lives with with laughter and a certain strength to do our best.

It is a blessing to be born into a great family, but Dick shared that gift and created a wonderful family with you, Barb. Our prayer is that Dick live on in the love you share with your children and grandchildren.

We will forever remember his lessons while skiing and his joy for life that he shared all the time!

Our love to all!

Dick Ehinger was the embodiment of empathy. Students and teachers alike were moved by his passion for life, his passion for teaching. In an age when bullying has become a serious topic I am reminded of watching his I.A.L.A.C. presentation some 40 years ago. He let students and teachers know that each had value and each had feelings. Like so many great educators he made a significant difference in the lives of those who knew him. His rich legacy remains in all who benefitted from his living.

Mr Ehinger was my seventh and eighth grade science teacher at school 77 in Buffalo, NY in 1963 & 64. He was one of the most gifted and talented teachers and everyone, even the difficult kids in the class loved and respected him. He made such a positive impression on me that I never forgot him. When I moved to Grand Island in the mid 90's I attended a lecture he presented at our Middle School about "7 Things" parents needed to know about raising happy children, and found him just as captivating then as I had so many years before. I was delighted that he had continued to live a happy life and was still doing what he was born to do, which of course was educating people. I am so saddend to learn of his passing. My deepest condolences go out to all in his family and friends. He was truly one in a million, and I will never forget him.

It is a widely known fact in education that one caring adult can make a difference in the life of a child. That one caring adult that many students of Southside Junior High School and later South Park High School had was Mr. Ehinger. He had the natural ability to connect with kids and it was evident he loved his mission. As his former student, who then became the principal of Southside and South Park High School, Mr Ehinger was a role model of mine. My interactions with students have been influenced by his example. I value the lessons of humanity I learned from Mr. Ehinger and hopefully through my career his legacy will continue in spirit.
