Robert Boyd Obituary

Robert (Bob) Wright Alexander Boyd, 53
HALIFAX, N.S. -- Robert (Bob) Wright Alexander Boyd, 53, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2012, surrounded by family after a valiant battle with cancer.
The son of Jean and the late Earle Boyd, Bob grew up in Halifax, N.S., attending Halifax West and then Saint Mary's where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce and an MBA. Bob was employed throughout his career with the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism.
Bob spent eight years managing the Nova Scotia Tourism Office in Portland. It was here wonderful friendships and memories were forged through coaching hockey and the many hockey trips throughout New England and Sweden. Charlie, Barbara, Jennifer, Sarah and Chad Drew of Portland became his second family.
When Bob returned to Halifax he met the love of his life, Kim Jardine. Kim is the best thing that ever happened to Bob. Bob was also devoted to Grandma Jean's third grandchild, Molly the cat who in recent months was his devoted companion.
Throughout his life, Bob was always a sports fan. He played hockey throughout school and then coached teams in Halifax, Portland, Bedford, most recently assisting with the C P Allen High School team, 'the Cheetah Family.'
Bob had a love of travelling. He enjoyed frequent jaunts to Maine where with Kim's assistance he honed his shopping skills. Visits to Kim's family compound in Boularderie let him reconnect with his Cape Breton roots. His love of all things British made London a favorite destination. Bob's other great passion was reading. Bob was rarely seen without multiple books and newspapers. While the purist in him preferred the joy of hard covered, lofty tomes, he did recently adapt to his Kindle.
Bob was truly a gifted individual, one of the most intelligent people you could meet. He was a man of strong opinions who did not tolerate fools. He was deeply private and, at times, a man of very few words, as his family often found out when trying to find out what he was up to. Bob
was a devoted son who always was there for his mother. Even when very ill, her health and wellbeing were paramount. His dry wit, often tinged with a hint of sarcasm, kept everyone on their toes. Bob had a great sense of humour which allowed him to develop the ability to tease anyone. Most importantly, he genuinely cared about people and always acted on that with kindness and generosity.
Bob had a rare ability to relate to children. He was always 'one of the kids.' This continued throughout his coaching. Bob had a special relationship with his nieces and nephew, whether playing Lego, cheering them on at soccer and football games, calling to hear about their most recent adventures, teasing or just showing constant love and support. Uncle Bobby was always interested in all their successes and activities. He was the perfect uncle-fun, quirky, indulgent, supportive and always proud.
Bob is survived by his wife Kim Jardine; mother Jean Boyd; sister Cathy Boyd (Brian Warshick); niece Samantha Warshick, nephew Alex Warshick; in-laws Wayne and Doreen Jardine; brother-in-law Kyle Jardine and wife Sylvia; special nieces Lindsey and Lily Jardine and the Jardine family grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Special thanks to the VON, Palliative Care nurses and doctors, Dr. Mark Dorreen, Oncology nurse Lynn Shore, the chemo nurses, Peter and Maria Hayes, John Brennan and 'the Tourism Family' for their incredible support during Bob's illness.
Bob will always be remembered for the person he was. He will be loved and missed.
Visitation was held in JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Hfx, N.S., on May 7, where a memorial service was held on May 8, in the chapel. For on-line condolences please visit www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
Donation may be made in Bob's memory to Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada, Diabetes Association or a charity of choice.

Kim and Family. A lovely and moving service on Tuesday afternoon. I met Bob the first day he started at Tourism many years ago and thought to myself "what a great guy!" That rang true to the very end when he was taken away from us. I already miss Bob's dry sense of humour and his never ending teasing each day, his "Bob-isms", our lunchroom banter and our unique way of sharing the newspaper. Bob was a very special man and was a great pleasure to call him my friend.

Dear Kim,
Bob's smile, quick wit, helpful, kind and generous nature was a gift to all of us who are fortunate to have worked with him. Whenever I had a question, Bob was welcoming and took the time to share his advice and knowledge. I miss him walking around the corner, on his way to visit Darlene or Lisa, often with a smile and always a funny comment. His positive influence in the office will be fondly remembered. So sorry for your loss.

Kim, I just wanted to say that the service today was beautiful. I feel truly blessed that Bob was my coach and mentor throughout my Tourism career. He taught me so much about how to be a great manager. He basically took a twenty something newbie and coached me into being the best I could be. He showed patience, kindness and humor in moments where I'm sure I must had been driving him crazy. I'm really going to miss him. I want to send you my deepest sympathies and my heart truly goes out to you for your loss.

As former Executive Director of the SSTA, I just want to say that I worked with Bob and respected him so much. Kim, I offer you my condolences. As a widow I know how much it hurts to lose a special partner and best friend. I write this with tears in my eyes. Consider yoursef hugged. I am on Cape Sable Island so am not going to be back to Kingswood before the funeral or I would have attended. This wonderful man will not be forgotten. May his memory enrich the remainder of your life as it will all who knew and worked with him. I saw Pam Wamback a couple weeks ago and knew that he was suffering. I hate what cancer does to all concerned. God bless you and grant you peace. Lots of love, Lynne Perry.

Bob and I started our tourism careers around the same time in the early 1980s – he in Portland and I at the Check Inns office in Halifax. I have called him a friend for almost 30 years and can't believe he is gone. We talked daily for many years, dissecting many tourism problems for which we always had a solution! Even after I came to Saskatchewan, we still stayed in touch by telephone. His wit and humour always showed the kindness and gentleness that was Bob. My deep sympathy to Kim, his mother, and his sister. May you find peace in knowing what a wonderful life he had with all of you.

It is so hard to believe that Bob is gone. He was a very important part in my life and in so many others lives that he touched. He was supportive and always there for you whenever you needed him. He was an icon at the Dept of Tourism and it won't be the same without him. His jokes and sarcasm were always enjoyed and always brought a smile. Kim and Bob made such a fantastic pair and we could all see that they brought out the best in eachother. Having them as 'parents' made me a pretty lucky girl!!! We had so many good times that I will cherish forever. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and all of his close friends. To Kim, I am sending you strength and love to help you get through such a difficult time. We were all so lucky to have Bob in our lives. He holds a very special place in mine. I will miss you Bob. I am unable to be in NS for the service, but know that I am there in spirit. xoxo

Pam Wamback

May 6, 2012

Bob was one of a kind! I will miss his jolly face, his jokes and sarcasm, his wit and humour and mostly hearing "Wamster" each day! I know there are no words that can ease your pain and sorrow right now, but I hope for a moment you can find a bit of peace in these words ... xoxo

God looked around His garden
and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the earth
and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
and lifted you to rest.
We know God's garden must be beautiful
because He always takes the best.
He saw the road was getting rough
and the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids
and whispered "Peace be thine".
As we look at your pictures,
sweet memories we recall
Of a face so full of laughter
and a smile for one and all.
If we could have a wish today,
it would not be for a million dollars or gold.
But just to have you back with us
as in the days of old.
A million times we needed you
and a million times we have cried
If love could have saved you,
you never would have died.
It breaks our hearts to lose you
but know you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you the day God called you home.
