Robert Standish Obituary

Robert D. Standish, 70, of Norwichtown entered a new zip code Friday, March 9, 2018, after passing away at Backus Hospital in Norwich.

Rob was born in Norwich, Sept. 11, 1947, the son of the late Basil Wilmarth Standish Sr. and Doris Kennedy Standish. He lived most of his life in the Norwichtown area, growing up there and going through his entire elementary school education at Samuel Huntington School and later living in that section of Norwich most of his adult life. He graduated from the Norwich Free Academy with the Class of 1965.

Rob was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier, working out of the Norwich Post Office for 34 years, and after retiring he worked part time for many years at Malerba's Golf Range in Norwich. In both jobs, he was known for being loyal, dependable, and responsible, for his sense of humor with a bit of sarcasm included, and for willingly doing more than expected for the people he served. He was an avid reader, loved doing word search puzzles, followed the UConn women's basketball team, and was a lifelong fan of the Red Sox.

Rob is survived by his three brothers: his twin, Raymond and his wife, Maureen, of Stafford Springs, Basil Jr. (Bill) of Preston, and Myles (Mike) and his wife, Angela, of Pensacola, Florida. He is also survived by his aunt, Harriet Standish Spencer of Manchester; several cousins; and his nieces and nephews, Michael Standish and Sharon Standish of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Mark, Alison, Kennedy, Kate, and Matthew Standish of Marietta, Georgia. He also leaves his many friends, some going back in time with him to their childhood days and some being his postal service coworkers, and his family would like to thank all his friends for their kindness and support, with special thanks to Larry and Tom. In addition to his parents, Rob was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Judy Dowe Standish.

At Rob's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Yantic Volunteer Fire Company, Yantic, CT 06389.

Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem Street, Norwich, is managing all aspects of Rob's passing.

To the Standish Family,

Reading this saddened me greatly as another Member of our Norwichtown community is lost. I remember many days in our old neighborhood. Classes at Huntington School, summer playground at Huntington, pickup baseball games in the church lot, sledding in the winter time. So many memories. Thank you for your service Rob. May God grant you eternal rest and peace.
