Robert Theobald III

Robert Alfred Theobald III, 86, of St. Simons Island, passed away on March 5, 2023.

"Bob" was born on March 27, 1936, in San Diego, to Capt. Robert A. Theobald II and Sigrid Norman. He was the older brother of Mary "Nikki" Majors, who died in 2022. Bob attended St. George's School in Newport, Rhode Island, after which he was educated at Swarthmore College. He earned his structural engineering degree at George Washington University.

In 1961, Bob married his wife, Mary Sage Hurst of Rochester, New York, who after 53 devoted years, died in 2014. Until moving to St. Simons in 2000, Bob and Mary raised their family in Bethesda, Maryland. Bob had a mastermind for engineering, enabling the success of his firm, Robert Theobald and Associates, in Washington, D.C. Bob had a Naval born love of water and boats, which led their family to a second home in Rehoboth, Delaware, and later onto his beloved, "Windaway" which he and Mary sailed throughout the Chesapeake Bay. Mary brought Bob a love of her family's Canadian lake property, Raynor Island, where they spent summers.

Beyond family, Bob's life was anchored by insatiable reading, his passion for woodworking, obsession with bridge and devotion to the Episcopal Church. Once on St. Simons Island, Bob became a devoted member of Christ Church, serving as both junior and senior warden. From an onsite woodworking room, Bob crafted many pieces for the church. Bob was a man committed to service and of dependable integrity.

Bob is survived by his children, Mary Celeste Kenny of Herndon, Virginia, Robert Alfred Theobald IV of Alexandria, Virginia, and Heather Louise Wuthrich of Hillsborough, North Carolina; and grandson, Colin Edwin Wuthrich of Hillsborough.

A future service at Christ Church will be announced at a later date.

Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home and Oglethorpe Crematorium are in charge of the arrangements.
