Sterling Provost Obituary

Sterling Roylance Provost, Ed.D.
1929 ~ 2014
Dr. Provost passed away peacefully on October 24, 2014 in Salt Lake City from a lengthy illness. Sterling was born on 13 August 1929 in Provo, Utah. The son of Earle D. and Freida Roylance.
He earned his BS and MS degrees at the University of Utah and received a doctorate from Brigham Young University. He served in the Utah Air National Guard and following an LDS mission to South Africa, was drafted in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Commendation Ribbon upon separation.
He met Florence Beverly Smith while they are singing in the Tabernacle Choir. They were married for time and eternity on 25 June 1954 by Elder Spencer W. Kimball in the Salt Lake Temple. Beverly passed away on 10 June 1998.
Children: Florence Gayle Higgins (Peter), Sterling Bruce Provost (Peggy).
Following graduation at the University at the University of Utah, he commenced teaching for the Church's school system for 13 years. Sterling joined Utah's higher education system in 1968. He retired in 1995 as an assistant commissioner.
He married Mardene Moulton Folkersen in the Jordan River Temple for time on 05 April 2000. Her children:
Bradley Folkerson (Marci), Leslie Babb, Keith Folkersen (Lauri), Roger Folkersen (Diann), Larry Folkersen (Traci), Kathy Gotchy (Dan).
Sterling was a life-long active member of the LDS Church. In addition to his full-time mission, he served as a stake high counselor, stake Sunday School president, and in a stake mission presidency. He also served two Church service missions. He taught priesthood quorums and gospel doctrine classes over countless years. He especially enjoyed attending temples throughout the world.
He volunteered his service during Utah's Centennial Year, the Church's 1997 sesquicentennial, and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
He was engaged for nearly 40 years in law enforcement-related activities. Sterling's latest appointment was by Governor Huntsman to the Utah Peace Officers Standards and Training Council. He also organized the SLCFBI CA Alumni Association Chapter.
He loved to play the piano, and had a on-going yearning to travel. Traveling to all 50 states and most foreign countries.
After 14 years of happiness with Mardene, Sterling now goes to join his beloved Beverly. He is survived by his dear wife, Mardene, his children, Gayle and Bruce, his granddchildren Barbara Florence, Patrick Sterling (Ashley), Michael Harold (Kimberly), Jessica Lynne, and Jamie Woodham. Along with his great-grandchildren: Jackson Peter, Crew Michael, Jane Posey, and Abigail Rose. Also, a half-sister, Earlena (Dan) Kimball, and a half-brother, Kay (Sherlyn) Lewis. His Beverly, parents, and an older sister Evelyn preceded him.
Services will be Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at 12pm, at the Hillcrest 5th Ward Chapel, 915 E. Peach Blossom Dr. Sandy, UT. A viewing will be held at the ward chapel at 10am prior to services. Dear Mardene and Provost Family,

Please accept our heartfelt condolences concerning the passing away of Sterling. The dedicated influence of a loving husband, father, and patriarch is a significant matter.

We loved and admired Sterling very much, indeed.

Sterling lived the life worth living, as an exemplar servant of the Lord. Sterling will be greatly missed by many people.

May the Lord's blessings of comforting solace, continual peace, and abiding love sustain you and your family members during this difficult time of mourning. May you and your family walk the path of bereavement with an enduring eternal perspective of the happy family reunion to come in a far brighter place.

What a beautiful tribute! I did not have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Provost, but he must have been an amazing man to have raised such an incredible son. Bruce is a man with uncompromised integrity. He is a testament to a life well lived by his father. Bruce shared many stories of his father with his Harley-Davidson family. Bruce, you cared for your father lovingly. I know he is proud of you.
May God bless you and surround you with His angels to carry through this very difficult time.

To a great man and a personal friend. We have missed him dearly the past few years. We send our best to his children Gayle and Bruce that we have met in the past.

I didn't know Sterling, but my father, Dave Lewis, was his half-brother. Earlina told me all about meeting him and like it was as if she had known him her whole life. When I saw his obituary, I thought my dad had another brother to greet him. My prayers are with you.

Sterling and I served together as missionary companions in Blooemfontein South Africa in 1949. Kind gentle and considerate he was one of my special missionary companions. We sang together in the Mormonaire Quartet where his beautiful voice sang bass. We were together for almost six months and a more sincere Elder could not have been found. I shall never forget the hours of prayerful study and his enthusiasm for music and the missionary work. I will always cherish our service together. Elder J Golden Barton
