PEORIA - Steven "Woody" Wood, 58, of Peoria passed away at 2:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Methodist Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
Woody was born on March 1, 1954, in Urbana, Ill., to Ray and Janice Wood. They survive.
Also surviving are his wife of 26 years, Edie Rupert, whom he married on Feb.18, 1986, in Peoria; one daughter, Erin (Greg) Miller of Peoria; one son, Ryan Wood of Peoria; one granddaughter, Lily Miller; two brothers, Mike (Patti) and Kevin, all of Peoria; one sister, Deborah (Dave) Labelle of Baltimore, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Woody is best known for his quick wit and story-telling, and above all, his ability to make people laugh. Even during his final days battling esophageal cancer, Woody cracked jokes and had family and friends in tears with laughter. He truly lit up the room when he entered, and he knew no strangers.
Woody enjoyed evenings out with family and friends and plenty of food and drinks. And as many could attest to, he loved to pick up the tab.
While Peoria didn't get enough opportunities to witness his talents, Woody had a delightful speaking and singing voice and unparalleled stage presence. He appeared on stage at Richwoods High School and Corn Stock Theatre for several hilarious performances. He also enjoyed being an audience member; his favorite musicals were "Annie" and "Jersey Boys."
Woody also loved watching sports, but as his friends and family know, his favorite teams and players varied from week to week. His family would like everyone to think of Woody and have a toast in his honor during tonight's Super Bowl. It was always one of his favorite days, and though he'll have a different vantage point this year, he will surely be watching.
Many also know Woody for his impeccable cooking skills. You were lucky if you had a chance to try his famous jambalaya and beer bread. A steak chef for several years, Woody loved being outside with his grill and his pool. But he is also known for his love of air-conditioning and his favorite thermostat setting of 62 degrees.
Woody loved golf and travel, especially his trips to Las Vegas several times a year.
He was a devoted friend, a loving husband and son, and a phenomenal father and grandfather.
A funeral Mass for Woody will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at St. Vincent de Paul in Peoria. Father Donald Henderson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Peoria Players Theatre or Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Edie and Family - my husband Rodger and I met Woody through Tony C's way back when. What a fun guy he was! Rodger had remained friends with him through the years through Fantasy Football. I can even remember going to a Christmas Party at your house right after we were married back in the 90s! He also learned to make jambalaya for the SuperBowl, so I am wondering if that was inspired by Woody! We were truly saddened to hear of his passing and am not sure if we will make the visitation but wanted to express our condolences. - Dana and Rodger Graves
