Susan Shaffer Hammond Obituary

Susan Ellen Shaffer Hammond

June 22, 1948 - April 30, 2024

Spokane, Washington - Susan (Sue) Ellen Hammond passed away April 30th, 2024 in Spokane, WA at age 75. She was born in Vanceburg, KY to Margaret (Smith) and Bill Combs on June 22, 1948.

Sue moved to Reynoldsburg, OH when she was 5 years old where she lived with her mom, dad, 2 brothers, 1 sister and her grandmother (Nanny). Sue graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in June 1966.

In July 1966, she married James Shaffer. They lived in Reynoldsburg, OH until relocating to Kennewick, WA in 1975 where they were expecting the work to be long at the Hanford site for Jim, and Sue worked as a grocery store checker. Together, they welcomed 5 sons, Robert, Thomas, John, Michael, and Mitchell. They were all the light of her life, and whenever she had the chance to have them all together, she made sure to get her picture! Sue and Jim were married for 30 years.

Sue married Lonny Hammond in 1997, blending his 3 children, Chris, Jim, and Lynn to her 5 for a total of 8. The 8 children blessed them with an abundance of grandchildren that they adored. Lonny and Sue moved to Arizona in 2000 to assist in the caretaking of her father Bill until his passing. While there, they adopted their precious cockapoo, Buddy. In 2004, they relocated to Clarkston, WA for 3 years and added Moose to the family. Three years later, they settled in Asotin, WA and added 2 more fur babies to the family when they welcomed Zaven and Little Bud, who stayed by their mom's side until the end. Sue and Lonny were married until his death on October 1, 2018. Sue continued to live in Asotin until 2023 when she moved to Spokane to live with her son Tom and his wife Mags.

Sue was in many groups and clubs throughout her lifetime where she met many women that became like family to her. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Moose Lodge 482 Member since 1977, Northwest Association of Mothers of Twins Club, Twice and Thrice (mothers of multiples) and the Red Hat Society. She spent many years going to conventions, playing Bunco and Bingo with friends.

Sue loved and was known for her amazing cooking and baking. Her delicious Christmas candies and cookies are loved by all her family, friends, and neighbors. Her beautiful Christmas trays had up to 27 different cookies and candies for all to enjoy. Her sons have taken up the tradition of baking their favorites that she has passed on, for their families and friends.

Sue enjoyed numerous hobbies including quilting and sewing, gardening and crafts. She made quite a few beautiful quilts and some of the most intricate Halloween costumes for her sons. In her later years, she enjoyed making Christmas ornaments for the Red Hat Society each year. Her love of crafting has been passed on to her grandchildren. Sue loved to decorate her home with beautifully themed rooms and has a vast collection of all things Noah's Ark.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret (Smith) and Bill Combs, husband, Lonny Hammond, sister, Kathy Scott, eldest stepson, Chris Hammond, and Jim Shaffer. She is survived by her brothers, David Combs (Cynthia), Jeff Combs (Diana), her sister Diane Scott (Rick), her sons Robert A. Shaffer (Christy) of Spokane, WA, Tom Shaffer (Mags) of Spokane, WA, John Shaffer (Sara) of Minneapolis, MN, Michael Shaffer (Christi) of Kennewick, WA, Mitchell Shaffer (Claudia) of Spokane, WA, stepdaughter Lynn Braswell (Marcus) of Richland, WA, stepson James Hammond (Katie) of Richland, WA, her 14 grandchildren Alisha, Robbie Jr, Kaylie, Anna-Marie, Libbi, Caitlin, William, DJ, Michaela, Jesse, Jackson, Lainie, Mae, and Jack, as well as her great grandsons, James and Onyx.

"When the day arrives that there are no more tomorrows for me, I want my children to know and never forget that they were, are, and always will be deeply loved by me." - Sue Hammond
