Sylvia Oseran Obituary

Sylvia Shafer OSERAN Sylvia Shafer Oseran was born in Seattle to Julius and Rebecca (Betty) Shafer on February 18, 1928, the youngest of five children. She passed quietly on the morning of July 6th, 2010. She was a positive, energetic person who loved life. When she was young, she enjoyed summers with her family at Three Tree Point. As an avid football enthusiast, Sylvia looked forward every Fall to the beginning of football season. As a child, when her parents went to the Husky games she would stand outside the gate, watching the game. When older, she and her husband, Mel attended Husky games and watched the Seahawks on television. At about fifteen years old, Sylvia graduated from Cornish School of Music where she studied piano. Sylvia was a feature editor on the Broadway High School "Whims" school paper. She wrote a column in a Broadway community paper about Broadway High School. She also worked for the "Seattle Star", an early Seattle newspaper. At The University of Washington, Sylvia was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. Traveling was one of her passions. Sylvia and her beloved husband, Mel traveled to Israel, Egypt, Africa, South America, Japan, India, Europe and more. Sylvia was a member of Glendale and The Bellevue Club where she loved playing bridge and tennis with her friends. She was an avid reader with a large book collection. Sylvia was a member of Temple De Hirsch, ORT, and NCJW. The most important aspect of Sylvia's life was her family and friends. Sylvia was devoted to her beloved husband, Mel, loving sister, Gloria and brother, Norton Shafer. She will be fondly remembered by her sisters, Harriet Katz and Elise Topp, children, Joel (Gail) Oseran and Laura (Brad) Miller, grandchildren, Michael, Zachary, Cora, Lindsay, Jarrett and Sam, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Services will be held Thursday morning, July 8th at 10:30am at Butterworth Arthur Wright Chapel, 520 West Raye St., Seattle, WA 98119. Remembrances may be sent to Kline Galland Home, The Washington Jewish Historical Society, National M.S. Society and Swedish Cancer Care.
