Victor Lundy Obituary

Victor Lundy
02/01/1923 - 11/04/2024
Victor Alfred Lundy, celebrated architect and artist died on November 4 in Bellaire, Texas. He was 101.

Victor Alfred Lundy was born on February 1, 1923, in New York City to Russian immigrant parents. In 1939, he enrolled at New York University to study Beaux-Arts architecture. After serving in the U.S. 26th Infantry Division during WWII, he returned to the States to continue his studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Design under Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer.
Victor moved to the Houston area with his late wife, the master watercolorist Anstis Burwell Lundy in the mid 1970's. Victor had previously designed and built a house in Aspen, Colorado. Subsequently he designed and built their house and studio in Bellaire.
Victors notable built works include the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce (1956); First Unitarian Church (1960) in Westport, Connecticut; the Unitarian Meeting House (1964) in Hartford, Connecticut; the IBM Garden State Office in Cranford, New Jersey (1965); the United States Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka (1985); the U.S. Court Tax Building (1974) in Washington, D.C., and One Congress Plaza in Austin (1987). His inflatable concession pavilions were a crowd-drawing attraction at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair.
Among Victor's many accolades are several AIA Merit Awards presented throughout the 1950s and 60s and a 1956 Progressive Architecture Award. In 2016, at the age of 94, he returned to Sarasota to receive a lifetime Art and Architecture Award from the Sarasota Architectural Foundation. This year he received the 2024 Medal of Honor for Design from the AIA Florida.

Victor is survived by his son, Nicholas, his grandsons, Jackson and Hudson and his stepson Mark.

December 21, 2024

On December 21, 2024 I received a late night text message from a former student of the passing of Victor Lundy. I had know idea of the loss of this highly accomplished man. My most recent lesson occurred on Wednesday October 30th. I will continue to honor Victor Lundy in my Art Appreciation course with discussions of his remarkable life, showing the documentary, and assigning a research project from The Library of Congress website. My students are to view, analyze, and write about the entries in his World War 2 sketchbooks. Please accept my condolences.
