William SLAZYK Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

SLAZYK, William DR. WILLIAM EDWARD SLAZYK Dr. William Edward Slazyk, 64, returned to the Lord God his Father and Redeemer on the morning of March 28, 2013. His passing was peaceful but unexpected. The loss of his tender and kind spirit has left a gaping emptiness in the hearts of his family, friends and students. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Edward G. and Alice Janowczyk Slazyk of Buffalo, New York. As a young boy, Bill spent countless hours trapping and fly-fishing in the woods that surrounded his home. He developed an exuberant love of nature which he enjoyed for the rest of his life. While attending the University of Buffalo where he earned a B.S. degree in Health Science, Bill participated in the track and field program throwing the shot put, discus and javelin. He loved basketball equally well, reminiscing often about playing in pick-up games with professional athletes around the Buffalo area. After graduation, Bill worked as a public health scientist for seven years at the Erie County Public Health Laboratories before pursuing his doctorate degree at UNC at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation, Bill began a 28 years career at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, from which he retired in September, 2011. During his free time, Bill could be found playing "AA" ALTA tennis, competing in highly competitive basketball leagues, talking to his neighbors, working in his garden at home, and - one of his favorites - eating breakfast at Evans Fine Foods. Bill adored all of the people associated with these activities. In the late 1980's, Bill survived a nearly fatal plane crash. Against all odds, he regained his ability to walk and to work. In spite of chronic pain and multiple surgeries, he never complained. More recently Bill became a constant support for his now deceased mother-in-law Sarah Bell. As he encouraged her to recover from a stroke, she and Bill became best friends. The joy in the home he and Debbie shared was contagious as Sarah and Bill laughed about their frequent practical jokes on each other. In 2007 Bill joined the Chattahoochee High School Track and Field team where he happily developed another passion in his life - helping young people see their potential and encouraging them to accomplish their goals. In 2009, Bill was offered the opportunity to transfer to Johns Creek High School where he became an ardent student of the throwing techniques for the discus and shot put. Although Bill loved his throwers and his fellow coaches, he also took time to meet and support other students involved in the non-throwing events. His support for the kids was authentic, and he took the greatest pride in their growth as people - not just as athletes. Bill is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Debbie Bell; his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara E. and Gerald A. Lipa; his sister and brother-in-law, Judith L. and David Montfort; in-laws, Carol Marie Bell and Anthony Bell, and his best friends, Clem Brannen and Tom Holder. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Coach Slazyk "Throw Long" College Scholarship Fund. Donations may be mailed to JOHNS CREEK HIGH SCHOOL, 5575 State Bridge Road, Johns Creek, GA 30022. A celebration of his life with the students and staff members of Johns Creek and Chattahoochee High Schools will be held at Johns Creek Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors at the Floral Hills Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The funeral service is scheduled at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A wake to celebrate his life will be held immediately following the service. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. at Arlington Memorial Park. Tributes may be left at www.FloralHillsFuneral.com.

Debbie, My heart hurts for you and Bill's family and friends. Bill was a good person who gave of himself to young people for all the right reasons. He truly cared about the growth and development of our young people, not just in athletics, but in Life. He went of our his way to make sure all the athletes, not just his throwers, knew how much he cared about them. Debbie, you are a good person, and I cherish our friendship. I am hurting for you and your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Bill's family and friends. With great respect and love, Mike Cloy

April 16, 2013

My name is Harrison. Coach was always around the school and wondering how I was doing. He never seemed to think about himself at all, and he gave a lot of time and devotion to the throwing team at JCHS. Coach Slazyk and I had a good bond due to our love for the outdoors. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.

I am attaching two pictures. One Bill took of me at my last college track meet about 40 years ago. It hangs in my office. I see it every day. Bill took the pictures in black and white film to show off his artsy side. (color film was invented then) I always think of that day and how
Bill took the time to develop and frame the picture and give it to me as a present months later. He wasnt always timely.

The next picture is of a Father's Day present Maura made for me a few years ago. The first frame is a copy of Bill's old picture, the next shows Mara and I
together at one of her first meets. The last shows her just after the winning throw. One of my favorite Fathers Day gift ever, and Bill somehow managed to be a part of it.

Ken Kollmar and I had a long talk last nightt remembering some of our silly moments with Bill. We had a good laugh. We both had long drives with Bill to Florida in our college years. The fact the we can remember some of the minute details is scary.

Kathy remembered Bill showing up at our house on Christmas Day (also Maura's birthday) with his new puppy. We had six kids all running around excited about Christmas and Bill shows up with a cute but not yet housebroken puppy. Typical Bill and he stayed through dinner. The kids still remember it as one of their best days and so do Kathy and I.

He will be missed. You are in a thoughts every day.

Bill was a great friend to all of the athletes and the other coaches and poured everything he had into his coaching of his throwers. He and I hung out quite a bit at Universal Studios during the Florida trip and that was really enjoyable. I don't think either one of us was that into riding too many of the crazy rides there, but walked around to the different venues enjoying the sights. I still remember the Friday night before the County Meet while I was finishing work on the outside long jump runway, seeing Bill meticulously putting the lines down for the shot put area. He really cared alot about everything he did.

In your time of grief, please know that he will be missed by those of us who coached with him, the athletes, coaches that he came to know on other teams and others that knew him. I will always cherish the times that I was able to spend with Bill and will have found memories of him.

May God help you deal with your loss and may you know that many prayers have been sent your way.

Debbie,

My name is Megan Vonderhaar, and I don't know if you remember me, but your husband coached me in the shot put and discus at Johns Creek HS in 2010 and 2011. I was very saddened to hear of his passing and I just wanted to email you and tell you what a great coach he was. He started coaching me before we were even at the same school and I have never had a coach invest so much time and effort into me as an athlete. He took me under his wing and developed me as both an athlete and as a person, and I would not have had the success I had without him. I made it to State both years under him, and I would have never been able to do that without him. To him, it wasn't just about track. He cared about his athletes deeply and wanted us to be successful in all aspects of life and was one of the best coaches I have ever had. He pushed me to be not just the best athlete, but the best person I could be. He always had such a positive attitude towards his athletes, which I can imagine would be difficult because we weren't always the easiest to work with. All of the medals, plaques, and accolades I received while at Johns Creek are a direct reflection of him as a coach. Even though he is gone, his spirit still lives on through all of the athletes he has coached. I would not be where I am or who I am if it wasn't for Coach Slazyk. I am very sorry for your loss.

As a parent I think we hope for those significant adults that will invest in our children and take on a mentor type role. Hayden was so fortunate to find that in her track coach, Bill Slazyk. He believed in her and invested his time in her to not just make her a good shot and discus thrower but also to make her a better person. He spent hours working with her to help her realize her dreams . Even though he coached her in track he would come out to support her when she played volleyball and basketball too. I always thought that was so cool. He was a bright light in her life and we grew to love him. Tonight I believe that Heaven is a brighter place. God called Bill home this morning suddenly. We will miss him dearly and will never ever forget him!!

Debbie,
I am thinking about you and hope you can find some peace. Having met Bill just a few times it was obvious he was such a good guy and how much love you shared for each other. I am so sorry for your loss.

April 8, 2013

While I only met Coach Slazyk a few times as my son throws shot put and discuss at JCHS, I noticed a GREAT quality in him. He always said something positive and encouraging to the kids. He seemed to spot something they did well , give 'em a pat on the back and tell them to build on it. He was obviously a very kind & compassionate man.

Bill was a friend of mine. He was my friend when we ate weekly at the Waffle House. He was my friend when we talked sports, any sports, high school to pro. He was my friend when we discussed each other's disability and gave each other moral support. But above all, he was someone who I will miss dearly, and I know that my life is better for having had him as my friend.

Debbie, Clem, and Evan's Family,
There is such a huge void at Evan's without Bill's presence. His coaching stories, sports analysis, stories about your successes as an educator, tales about his experiences as a substitute teacher, and dry wit is sorely missed. And then, there was the tremendous bond of friendship that we witnesses between him and Clem at breakfast on Saturday mornings. Please know that my thoughts, prayers, and tears are with you during this time. We all miss him.
