William Walters Obituary

Dr. William Everett "Bill" Walters II, 72, died from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Born in Kansas City, Mo., at age one, his first beach outing was to Morro Bay, as his father was stationed at Camp S.L.O. By age two, he steered his first boat. Thus, began his life-long affair with adventure, water and sailing. Fostering this love, as a boy on Lake Quivira, Kan., he eventually sailed the world, finally mooring in Ventura and Morro Bay Harbours. Bill graduated from Shawnee Mission High in Kansas in '?58. He studied at Tulane University, then graduated as a KU Jayhawk in '?61. Following his father's footsteps, he graduated from KU Medical School '?65. He retired as a U.S.A.F Col., where he served as a flight surgeon in Vietnam and Thailand. He was Board certified in Psychiatry and Neurology and served for 20 years. He enjoyed caring for his patients at Atascadero State Hospital and in his practice. He will be greatly missed by all. Bill is survived by his long-time love, Marsha Walters; and loving children Tyler (Julie) Tad (Hilary) Allyson (Michael Starman) and Molly; step-son, Jeffrey (Jenny); sisters Candace and Marti (Jak); and brother, Bobby; grandchildren Ethan Isabella and Eithne; step-grandchildren Michael, Matthew, Julianna, Bryan, Reese, Dakota and Melody; and nephews Aaron and Patrick. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Byron Walters (Helen); mother Florence Yount (Raymond); and stepson, Bryan Catchings. Please join the family to celebrate Bill's life at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Chapel of the Roses, 3450 El Camino Real in Atascadero. Chapel of the Roses 466-1161 Atascadero

I just found out today about the loss of Dr. Walters. I am devastated and completely shocked by this news. He was one of the most down to earth doctors I have ever had. He has helped me through many ups and downs, and I knew he could always explain why and what to do about any situation. I never felt like I was being evaluated I just felt like I was a friend and we were catching up on life, because he always talked about his own life and family which made me feel normal. I send prayers to his family for their loss and to all his other patients and friends that are hurting. I can tell by all the posts that he has touched the hearts of many people. It is going to be very difficult to find a replacement for you, you are a one-of-a-kind!! Dr. Walters, I thank you for all your words of wisdom and I will miss you very much. "Yes please, I would love a diet coke" He never failed to ask the question, "what would you like to drink, diet or regular coke." RIP Dr. Walters. I will NEVER EVER forget you!!!

I just found out today! I'm heartbroken for him and his family. He was a wonderful doctor. I first saw him in the mid-nineties, then he went to ASH, and thankfully back to private practice. He was so smart, well read, funny and always offered a coke.

As I've been trying to keep up with caring for Bill's patients over this past month, I've realized that it's pretty hard to fill his shoes! As all the comments from patients indicate, he was a caring and generous man who used his self as well as his medical know-how to help people feel better.

I will miss our after-hours chats. He could wax poetic on subjects philosophical, political, historical, military, nautical, familial, psychiatric, athletic, and gastronomic.

I called him “the Admiral,” because he loved the ocean and his boats so much and because I could really imagine him keeping track of a whole fleet of vessels and commanding the respect of all those sailors. Bill, you commanded our respect, and we at Coastal Psychiatric Care miss you!

It has been over four weeks since I was told the devastating news of Dr. Walters death. He always offered me a rum and coke knowing full well that I don't drink, then he would have that smile and twinkle in his eyes.

His office was always serene, reflecting his love for sailing and all the honorable books on the shelves, I asked if he read, to which he replied "Every book on the shelves he read and could quote from them if I liked.

The first visit was the hardest visit for me, standing in the middle of his office crying my heart out, he gently sat me down and held my hand till I was calm. I will never forget how I felt after leaving his office, smiling not only on the outside but on the inside too. I will truly miss him and his faith...in all things. It will always seem odd to me that my last visit with him was one of the best ever.

I extend my heart felt sorrow and prayers to the family. He will be truly and deeply missed by all his patients.

I had not known Dr. Walters long, but when I was distressed he was able to diffuse the emotions and comfort me. He once held my hand and read sonnets to me by Shakespeare, writings of Plutarch. First thing he would do is offer me a coke. I loved him and will miss him.

My precious friend how we both miss you so very much you're so important to me in so many ways i will miss you forever my friend

Doc was the most caring psychiatrist I've ever met. There was never a doubt he cared for his patients above the call of duty. He wove in stories of his own family just enough so his patients felt like real people instead of mental illness sufferers. He went out of his way to help my family so many times, and I will always be grateful for that. It brings a smile to read others' stories of his Diet Cokes, goofy sense of humor, and extreme intelligence. He treated his patients with dignity and with his whole heart. No wonder so many people are devastated by his passing. Much love to your family, Doc Walters.

Bill was (and still is) one of the most intelligent humans I have ever known. The conversations we shared were amazing and I loved every minute of being in Bill and Marsha's home. Bill always made me *think*, and for that, I'm eternally grateful. My prayers for your next stage, my friend, and prayers for Marsha and all the children. Take care Bill - and we will pick up the conversations when we meet again. Happy sailing.

Dr. Walter's was not only a brilliant doctor but a special man. He would always greet me with "There's my favorite patient, always on time" I loved that because he never was! He helped me grow and quieted my fears and answered all my questions! His death is a tragedy and I am so sorry to his family. I am going to miss you more than you know! I told him in our last session that I would call him Everett and he shook his head and smiled! I am so glad he lived such a great life and helped so many people because that's what he was chosen to do! I WILL MISS YOU SO MUCH!

It has been an honor to know and work with Dr. Walters. He cared so much about his patients and staff, that he would answer his cell phone..from his sailboat...on his day off...knowing the call was work related! Thanks for empowering those of us around you, Doc, and always making us feel like we were not just part of the "team" but family. Thank you for taking the time, not just to teach me, but to have a conversation with me about anything from neuron receptors to sailboats and trains! You will be deeply missed....and forever remembered!

Wonderful man. I never felt that I had to tell him anything. I was able to just be me. He made me feel like I was visiting with a friend not being analized by a Dr. My thoughts and prayers to his family. It will be impossible to find someone else whom I will feel as safe and comfortable with as I did Dr. Walters.

Dear Survivors, I am so sorry that I cannot join you at the memorial service. I am out of town on vacation. I will miss sharing with you about my incredible friendship with Captin Billy. I loved my friend Bill and will miss him intensely. We laughed and discussed life and afterlife together often. He is now with God and laughing about how Dr. Lucifer has won the argument regarding afterlife. My friend Bill was a caring and loving bumbler like the rest of us and said as much himself in many of our conversations. Damn! I miss you already Captin!

With Love and Respect,

Lucien AKA Dr. Lucifer

What a caring and fun man and doctor... Couldn't ask for a more caring and genuine doctor! I always felt a little happier after "my visits" with Dr. Walters. I will miss him! I am so saddened by the loss of this wonderful man :(

I'm going to miss Dr. Walters. He was a great guy. As a patient, he helped me through a lot in my life and got me set straight. I always went in feeling bad, but never left without a smile on my face. I don't think there was ever a time where he didn't offer me a rum and coke during every appointment. My heart goes out to his family and friends as well as his patients and staff. I will surely miss this kind, funny, and caring man.
