With fond memories I see Professor Ashton in my mind almost always. How can I express what my heart feels knowing that she has returned the earth, wind and fire of of the universe. My memory will never forget her kindness. How I once carried her groceries home for the butcher on 7th street. Having tea in her yellow home on 11th street. She processed a vision of art and life
I can only imagine. She made it possible for me realize my potential, and for that I am so grateful.
With her beautiful smile, I stare back at her and say , thank you with tears in my eyes.

I met Dore in the early '70s, when I was a young teenager. What I most remember about her was the way she always treated me with respect most other adults reserved for people of their own generation. I remember challenging, penetrating questions from her that prompted me to educate myself so as to be able to speak more knowledgeably on various and varied subjects at subsequent meetings. I'm behind the curve, but I was so sorry to learn of her passing. May her memory be a blessing for Paris.

Dore was my teacher in the early 80s. Gracious and generous, I remember she invited me to her apartment to lend me a book even though she was very ill. Dore was a presence but she always made time for us, sharing her knowledge and experiences. How fortunate we Cooper students were! Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Ah, Dore!
You were the last of the true originals, graced with a strong voice and a keen mind, a generous heart and a tempered ferocity that was inspirational. How fondly will I always remember you, your wit, your acumen, your brilliance.

Dore, dear Dore, you mean so much to me: my teacher, my mentor, my inspiration, my critic my surrogate mother, your term and it is true. Your beautiful mind: precise, strong, sensitive and resolute with a clarity, willpower and judgement that cut through everything. Your commitment and love for art, truth, and social justice was unyielding.
So many memories, beautiful, rich memories like Barcelona Beach in the Hamptons, the old car, the study, the desk, the rotary phone, the file cabinet, the letters, the Rothko, Keleb, the parties, the dancing, lovely sweet Matti who married us, the readings, lectures, passionate discussions, Matti's end and how you suffered and hardened, I think it was the biggest loss and disappointment of your life.
My most beautiful memory is with you, Matti and my mother Anna Vijn, in her kitchen in Holland, eating herring and discussing Becket. My three dearest people who are no more. I will carry you with me forever. I am fortunate to know and love you.

Dore was my aunt so I never saw the professor side of her or realized the influence she had over so many. Its interesting to read all these tributes. We always use to look forward to driving into the city with my Dad to pick her up for holiday dinners. My Dad passed last April so hopefully they are together now, sharing a good laugh, probably with their father!

I remember most mornings in the Humanities and Social Sciences office, Dore would greet me good morning, check her mail, and then go directly into her office to meet with her students. She was energetic and completely devoted to her profession. May she rest in peace and my condolences to her family.

She will be missed by so many - Dore was a humanist and activist not only in this country but also in Italy and around the world. She was an extra-ordinarily fearless woman and followed her curiosity with no boundaries. Dore was a poetic interpreter who went directly to the creative source, at the core of the worlds of literature, music, urbanism and, of course, art. Literature animated her writings, no matter the topic. She felt at home at Cooper Union because the institution transcended academic stereotypes and allowed people to be who they were. I suspect she left us now unable to tolerate the currents events in our country. We will miss her intransigent passion for life and justice.

As obvious as the outcome might seem now, people like Dore Ashton went to the barricades on behalf of modernism. Bliss was it that dawn to be alive, but to be young (and in New York) was mere heaven...

My sincere condolences Paris Marina, for your great loss. You could not have been a more devoted, loving daughter. Thank you for keeping Dore's friends close to her.
Your treasured mom will be missed her voice, haimishness, support, laughter, openness, blunt directness, full of surprises---a drawing of a still life she sent on a post-card one summer a practitioner and lover of true-art, an amateur, as she'd say. My thoughts are with you Marina.

My condolences to Dore's family and many friends. She was my professor at Cooper Union in the 1970's, and a catalyst for many fine people in the broad realm of the arts. She believed in social conscience and the importance and inspiration of art and literature, for clarity and change. She was truly like a sun, around which others sought her generosity, wisdom and favor. Her intelligence and influence will endure, but she will be missed.

She was a wonderful teacher who taught her students that art history was part of world history, to stay engaged and to question what they saw. Her classroom was always a very exciting, thought-provoking place. I remember when Isamu Noguchi came to talk in her class. Standing room only! Condolences to her family.

As a student at Cooper in the early 1980's, Dore shaped so many of my young artistic and political beliefs. She was always loyal and opinionated, and never lost that twinkle in her eye. In 1983 Dore gave me "Bill's" address in the Hamptons and even the last time I saw her, she loved remembering that I handed her a thesis with direct quotes from my unannounced visit with DeKooning. The exhibition she curated in 1997 of my work with her brief essay will always be a highlight of my life. Her support of my work was an unequaled affirmation. I am so grateful for my friendship with this true intellectual and lovely woman whose correspondence was always poignant and loving. She will always be a presence in my studio! Much Love Marina.

Hi Dore, I'm devastated. Really. I never thought you would leave.
I knew you for not very long. You called me "Ma Nishma Babait," alluding to my Israeli upbringing. We shared that aspect in common, as your late husband was Israeli as well.
You once invited me to look at your late husband's documents, which were in Hebrew, and perhaps translate a few for you. You said they were just lying around there aimlessly. I never found the time to go. No, let me rephrase: I never made the time to come.
Your departure leaves me in enormous regret. I understand now how fleeting everything is, and perhaps how important that offer was to you. Who knows. I cannot impute any feeling to you, as you were always somewhat impenetrable. In the past year I have been having thoughts about remedying my error, but this time, could not find the money to come to NYC.
You were unparalleled. Unparalleled.

For me, Dore Ashton was so much more than a professor of art history, though that was her title at the time I placed myself under her guidance. She was a woman with a deep commitment to and faith in personal values rooted in post-war progressive, humanistic thought, yet in possession of an astoundingly nimble, curious, dynamic and questioning mind on such a diverse a range of topics and viewpoints which always provided the space for her students to explore, expand, think through and create for themselves their pathways to their own destinations, which to me is the highest compliment one can pay to a teacher. Dore leaves behind a legacy whose light will shine that much more brightly as there are few left who can match the depth and breadth of her particular pedagogical wisdom.
More so than any other professor, Dore introduced me to the world of the mind and was a pivotal influence in the shaping and development of my intellectual, cultural and ethical trajectory - indeed, if not also the development of my character as well - as she must have been for so many others who beat a path to her door at The Cooper Union and elsewhere. Though our paths diverged as the years passed, she has been a foundational presence in my life and will be deeply missed.
Paris Marina, I know how dedicated you have been to your mom all these years, and how difficult this time is for you. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers, especially at this difficult time. My heart goes out to you.

My mom. She was an incredible person in any and every way. To me, she was ferociously , my supporter and friend. She always put me before herself. My finest memory is of her putting me in the child seat on our old fashioned yellow bicycle, and then pedaling to town. As we reached a spot along the way that had a tree stump inbedded in the sidewalk , she would tell me to get ready to get over the hump...and we did, with giggles and bumps alike. That was my mom. Every hump encountered, we got over....together. I love you mama.
