FREDERICK BAEKELAND Obituary

BAEKELAND--Frederick,

of New York, died on December 25th at the age of 89 after a long illness. He was the son of George Baekeland and Cornelia Middlebrook Baekeland. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, attended Harvard University, then went into the US Army and was stationed in Japan. He went on to graduate from Columbia University in 1951 with a degree in chemistry. Subsequently, he earned a medical degree from Yale Medical School. He was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Downstate Medical Center until 1976, at which time he decided to devote his life to studying and dealing in Japanese art. He and his wife, Joan Davis Baekeland, established Toyobi Far Eastern Art, selling fine Japanese art to serious collectors and major museums in the US and London. Dr. Baekeland received many prestigious awards, gave several museum lectures, and published many museum catalogs and articles - one for the NY Times on "Psychological Aspects of Art Collecting" in 1981. He donated many works of art from his own collections to various museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His hobbies included tennis and collecting Hudson River School American art and contemporary glass sculptures. In addition to his wife of 49 years, Joan Davis Baekeland, he is survived by his son, Scott Baekeland of Bisbee, AZ, his daughter, Heidi Baekeland Phillips of Nashville, TN, two grandsons, Errol and Leo Baekeland, and his sister, Cornelia Baekeland Bagarotti of Tarrytown, NY.

I will always miss you Dad. I am hoping I am as positive an influence on other people's lives as you were when my time comes to move on.Thank you so much for everything I have learned from you. Love, Scott

Fred was a brilliant, intelligent and resourceful man, using his prodigious talents to both help others and to forge a wider understanding of art and humankind. I have many memories of him at Camp in the Adirondacks -a formidable presence on the paddle tennis court, lively conversationalist at dinner, and always willing to join in the fun. He will be missed by many friends and family, but most of all by Joan - the two of them had the best marriage of any two people I have known. Much love to you, Joan.

Fred was a fellow resident of mine at Payne Whitney. We played tennis together for many years, and it was Fred who introduced my wife, Leslie, and me to Redding, Ct. where we have lived for the past 46 years. I have many fond memories of him.

Fred and I plated tennis together for 32 years and discussed the problems of the world and solved many of them on our drives back and forth to the courts. He was a manor great intelligence and insight and my wife and I were glad we knew him as well as we did. Peter and Jeanette Schrag

I met Fred perhaps only once, but I heard very kind things about him from my mother and father - that he was an intelligent, accomplished, and a kind man. Joan, I am so sorry for your loss. We send our love and condolences to the entire family.

I remember Fred as a fierce tennis opponent, and like his grandfather, he could talk your ears off about any subject.
My heart goes out to Joan, Scott and his family and Heidi.
