RICHARD PENDLETON Obituary

PENDLETON--Richard W., Jr., died on December 10, 2020 at his home in Manhattan. Dick was born 87 years ago in East Orange, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1955 and from Yale Law School in 1958. After law school, Dick joined the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton as an associate, from which he embarked on a long and successful business career with the Phelps Dodge Corporation, retiring in 1988 as Executive Vice President and General Counsel. Dick was an accomplished sailor, and his annual summer cruises in Maine with crews spanning two generations of his many friends were wonderfully memorable experiences. His passion for sailing also took him to international waters, including cruises off Nova Scotia, Scandinavia, Venezuela, New Zealand and the Pacific Northwest, and led to his trusteeship of the Mystic Seaport Museum and the G.W. Blunt White Library, and to his membership in the New York Yacht Club and the Cruising Club of America. Dick was an outgoing and generous person with a keen intellect and an engaging sense of humor. His many friends greatly enjoyed his company, and he belonged to numerous clubs and other organizations which benefitted from his active involvement. Dick loved classical music and frequently attended concerts and performances at the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera. He was especially fond of choral music and for many years was a trustee of the American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey. Dick was also an avid squash player at the Union Club in New York, where he served as a Governor and in many other capacities through the years. He was a past trustee of the Avon Old Farms School in Avon, CT, and was a member of the Dauntless Club in Essex, CT, the Metropolitan Club in Washington, DC, and the St. George's Society and the Society of Mayflower Descendants in New York. Dick will be greatly missed by all of us who knew him and by the many organizations that he served so well. We hope to gather in New York City to give Dick a proper send-off as soon as it is safe to do so.

RICHARD LEATHER

A keen executive, a still keener gentleman and sailor. The pleasure of his company over near 25 years left me and my wife grateful to have known him and enriched still.

I was fortunate to crew with Dick over several summers in Dick's sails up the eastern seaboard to Canada. Dick was one of the smartest, funniest, and most generous people I've ever known. I think of him often and will for the rest of my life.

It was sad to see this news about my former colleague, boss, and mentor at Phelps Dodge. Dick Pendleton was one of the brightest and nicest people I worked with in my long career. His advice and guidance helped me then and for the rest of my career. We would meet for an occasional lunch at one of his NYC clubs, years ago with George Monroe, and later just the two of us. I treasure the long-term relationships and he will be missed.
I would appreciate notice if and when we meet to honor his legacy.

I worked with Dick Pendleton in the Phelps Dodge Legal Department in the mid 1980s. I remember him as a meticulous lawyer and an avid sailor. He organized and hosted a wonderful retirement party for long-term CEO George Munroe.
