JAY HOROWITZ Obituary

HOROWITZ--Jay, 71, of Golden, CO, died from complications of cancer. He was a prominent attorney with a varied and unconventional career. Born in Philadelphia; a Rufus Choate Scholar at Dartmouth College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, and graduating from Harvard Law School in 1967, while taking courses in African Studies at Boston University. Clerk for the Honorable Thomas Masterson, US District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; Assistant US Attorney starting under Robert Morgenthau in the Southern District of New York; Assistant Special Prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force starting under Archibald Cox, leading numerous investigations in the course of which he deposed Mr. Nixon and contributed to the conviction of several of Nixon's associates. A principal at several small firms in Denver, handling a vast range of federal and state legal matters, from corporate litigation to criminal defense to appellate practice, including extensive pro-bono work; a supporter of myriad non-profit and arts organizations; a teacher at the University of Denver Law School and at continuing legal education programs; chosen as one of the four lawyers other Colorado lawyers would retain to represent them personally. Proud of his Jewish heritage, yet tenacious in his representation of a client defamed as anti-semitic, successfully winning an unprecedented verdict sustained on appeal against the Anti-Defamation League. Husband of Elizabeth Hardin of Golden, CO, father of Alexandra Horowitz and Damon Horowitz, and grandfather of Ogden Horowitz Shea, of New York City. Jay was dynamic, creative, engaged, principled, and generous; a trusted friend and advisor to his many clients and associates; deeply loved and dearly missed by his family.
