MORTON HYMAN Obituary

HYMAN--Morton P. With profound sadness the family of Morton P. Hyman advises of his death on Monday, November 17, 2014 at age 78, following a brief illness and with his beloved family at his side. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and devoted friend and colleague to so many, Mort inspired all with his zest for life, his commitment to public service and his generous philanthropy. He will be sorely missed. Mort had an illustrious career in the shipping industry and was deeply involved in many philanthropic organizations. He served as President (1971-1999), President and CEO (1999-2003), and Chairman of the Board of Directors (2000-2003) of Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. Mort also held the position of Vice Chairman of Discount Bank and Trust Co. Ltd., one of the largest privately owned Swiss banks, and was President of its affiliated investment companies until his retirement in 2003, at which time he founded MPH Enterprises, LLC, a private equity investor. Dedicated to many worthy philanthropic organizations, Mort served as Chairman of the Sabin Institute, Vice Chairman of the Mount Sinai Health System and was a former trustee of The Brearley School. He was the Chairman of the Board of Continuum Heatlh Partners and Beth Israel Medical Center for many years. He served as the Chairman of the New York State Public Health Council from 1985 to 1995. He is survived by his adoring family: his devoted wife of 35 years, Chris Stern Hyman, his son, David, his daughter Sarah, son-in-law Andy Washkowitz and their children, Henry and Zoe Washkowitz, and many beloved friends. We are all devastated by this loss. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 20, at 10am at Central Synagogue at 652 Lexington Avenue at 55th Street. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Sabin Vaccine Institute or the Mount Sinai Health System.

Mr. Hyman drew a sketch of me in 1966 at the Roosevelt Field Mall.
My charcoal sketch looks like it was drawn yesterday! My condolences to his family. A gentle person... that’s why I asked him to sketch me.

I have been thinking of Mort these past few weeks, and am stunned to learn just now of his passing.
We grew up together on the Upper West Side, we were in the same kindergarten class, and we saw each other often during college days. Since then, only a few meetings over the years.
He was a wonderful human being, and a beloved person in my life.

I have only recently learned of Mort's death . . . a great person with whom it was a privilege to work and more importantly to become a friend. Additionally he was an outstanding chair of the Public Health Council.Unfortunately few people know what a central role he payed in the AIDs crisis as well as shaming the state legislature into acing on smoking

Peace and all good things,

Chuck Fahey (aka Msgr Charles Fahey)

Even under great tragedies, we have hope. Can our loved ones live again? The Bible says yes; on the earth, in peace, and forever. Palms 37:9-11,29.

Dear Mrs. Hyman, David, Sarah & Andy,
Gary, Sterling and I are deeply saddened by the news of the death of Mr. Hyman. Gary has the privilege of taking care of the country home and Mr. Hyman was a very kind and gentle, gentleman. He will be sorely missed by all of us. Someone once told me that 'death is the end of a life, but not the end of a relationship' and I hope you will find solace in these words and from your friends and relatives.
