I worked closely with Mr. Mercer around the time Jimmy Goldsmith tried taking over Goodyear. I'm constantly reminded of Mr. Mercer's words and wisdom during this trying time. He was a true leader with the heart of a servant. Nobody else could've navigated Goodyear through this crisis better than Mr. Mercer. He was a great man.

Bob Mercer was my boss, mentor and friend. We shared a passion for baseball and I strived to include a baseball reference in every speech I wrote for him. There was one speech I didn´t mention baseball. He called me to his office. "Are you OK?" he asked, going on to ask why there was no baseball reference in the prepared remarks for a sales group. I explained that I couldn´t find a good place for one. "Look here!" he said, pointing to a place in the speech referring to the need for teamwork between sales, distribution and marketing. "Tinker to Evers to Chance!" he exclaimed, recalling the Chicago Cubs famous double play combination in 1908. It was vintage Bob Mercer.

I first crossed paths with Bob Mercer when I worked at the old Akron Regional Development Board. I wasn't the most important guy in community service, but he always remembered me and would answer my letters and inquiries personally. He gave a presentation at our church on eithics and for years after I would share stories from that talk with others in presentations of my own. Bob Mercer was a highly-principled executive and one of my role models. It was a privelege to know him. Jim Kroeger, Fairlawn, OH

Dear Mercer Family,
It was an honor and my pleasure to love and care for Bob. Even meeting him in his 90’s, he was grand and larger than life. So sad for his passing and absence. Mae will be loved and cared for until they meet again. That is surely my peace and comfort.
Love to all of you,
Teresa Hamlin

It was a pleasure & life-changing experience to be Bob Mercer’s speechwriter 1984-87. We had fun and a lot of laughs with our one-liners & baseball stories. He was a great man, a great leader and a great example. Thank you, Mr. Mercer. You are already missed
