John Wiedey Obituary

John Edwin Wiedey

WADSWORTH -- John Edwin Wiedey, 78, of Wadsworth OH died Monday, January 9, 2017 at Wadsworth Pointe following a period of declining health.

John was born in Akron OH on August 3, 1938. In his teens, he discovered his passions for his hero Thomas Edison and for antique restoration and collecting. He graduated from Buchtel High School in 1956 and pursued a degree in chemistry from Purdue University, but returned to Akron after being diagnosed with diabetes, graduating from the University of Akron. It was there that he met the love of his life, Frances Graham, who was his dentist's assistant and to whom he was happily married for 49 years. They settled in Wadsworth in 1970, buying the historic Victorian home of his Nolf relatives. He took great pride in restoring this home over the years and using it as a showcase for his extensive collection of antiques, collectibles, and the phonographs that were his pride and joy. He was a member of Questers Organization and the Michigan Antique Phonograph Society. As a member of the Wadsworth Cribbage Club, he wrote a column in the local paper under the pseudonym Johnny Double Run. With his wife, he was a longtime member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and in later years a curator of the Wadsworth Historical Society museum.

He is survived by his wife, Frances (nee

Graham) of Wadsworth; son, John (Amy Lloyd) of Bedford MA; daughter, Beth (Phil) Gilbert of Columbus OH; grandchildren, Angus Wiedey and Graham Gilbert. He was preceded in death by parents, Donovan and

Martha (nee Nolf), sister, Martha Louise Pinder, and many beloved pets.

A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 146 College St., Wadsworth where the family will receive friends on hour prior to the service from 10 -11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Mark's church.

I was John's college roommate at Purdue for our freshman and sophomore years. John and I spent many hours in "bull sessions". He was a delight to converse with. He and I came from exactly opposite socio-economic backgrounds which enlightened both of us and helped expand our horizons.

Dear Wiedey family,
My deepest sympathy to you all during this time of mourning. I have great memories of growing up in Wadsworth and Highland Ave and your dad(husband, father). He was always always smiling and joking and was such a kind and nice man! Even when we were getting in trouble he was always supportive and thoughtful! Thinking of you all!

To the Wiedey Family - John and I worked together for many years at Goodyear - we talked almost every day, even though we worked in seperate areas of Goodyear. He was quite a guy and I had much respect for his loyalty to the company and his work.

John was a good man. I only knew him for a few years...he was a gentle soul and I am glad to have known him. I recall going to a flea market with him and Richard Dickey, what fun we had! My only brother died years ago, but he loved old records and old record players, and so did John, which is why John reminded me of my brother. Maybe they will finally meet? I hope Frances is doing alright. She is a terrific woman. I wish peace for him and his family.

Mrs. Wiedey and family. I am so very sorry to read of Mr. Wiedeys passing. I followed his care for years until Dr. Slaby retired. He was always a delight to care for....a very sincere and gentle soul. You have my most sincere sympathy.

It is with sadness that received word of the passing of a long-time phonograph collector and friend. John had a passion for Edison and phonographs. As a long-time member of the Michigan Antique Phonograph Society, he attended conventions and was always eager to share his wealth of information and stories of collecting experiences. John and his wife Frances provided us with a wealth of information when we wrote two books. The first was Phonograph Dolls that Talk and Sing and the second was Phonograph Dolls and Toys. Their phonograph dolls and toys are now part of phonograph history documented in these books. John's thoughtful, analytical perspective always provided interesting conversation. Their Victorian home was the perfect venue to display their collection of phonographs, dolls and toys. Those in our hobby who knew John will recollect his soft-spoken dry humor. Regretfully new collectors to our collecting hobby have not had the opportunity to know John, who had a passion for his hero Thomas Edison since he was a teenager. We express our sympathy to his wife Frances and to their family.
