Richard FRANK Obituary

FRANK, Richard

Richard John Frank of West Palm Beach, Florida, artist, teacher and museum educator, passed with dignity into God's hands on April 29, 2014 at the age of 67. He was the beloved son of Constance Hey and John Frank who preceded him in death. His MFA and MA in Museum Studies degrees served him well in the pursuit of his career in the Fine Arts. His work received many awards and was represented in many galleries and was sought after by museums, corporations and private collectors. He was Curator of Education at both the Norton Museum of Art and at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. During the last years of his life, he pursued his passion - painting - but still found time to be on the faculty of the Boca Raton Museum's Art School and to serve as Guest Lecturer at the Society of Fine Arts. Richard was a friend and confidant to many arts professionals and was an inspiration to many art students in South Florida - he will be missed. A memorial celebrating his life and achievements will be scheduled for a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to The Museum of Art, 600 N. Woodland Boulevard, DeLand, Florida 32720 - Tel. (386) 734-4371.

Richard was a friend from South Dade High School. I have not seen him since 1964. He played a base or baritone saxophone for many years. My mother was employed by his mother many years ago. I just learned of his death.

I was greatly saddened to learn of Mr. Frank's death. I knew him while he was working in his studio in Flamingo Park and attended several of his later shows. He was always ready to advise and talk to lesser talents than he and was most gracious

If you haven't seen the exhibition of Richard's work at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County at 601 Lake Avenue, make sure to do so. It runs through October 11. The exhibition will also be traveling and we hope to have it at the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, too.

Richard Frank: A Look Back
"Frank is a master of the watercolor medium. No one else is able to orchestrate gradations of color using the white of the paper as well as he, and always within ordinary meadow scenes, coastal views or whatever other bit of local landscape he decides to turn into art. He is the ultimate master at hiding all traces of the scaffolding upon which he erects his compositions. His entire oeuvre is directed at drawing our attention to the natural wonders that have enchanted him."

No words can express my sorrow over Richard's passing. I first met him many years ago as my teacher. As time passed he became my friend, confidant and mentor. He was always one of the most enthusiastic supporters of my growth as an artist. I can still see him looking at me with that smile that came through his eyes; saying, "whatever it is you are doing, just keep doing it!".
He was the kindest, gentlest person and the most talented artist I have ever known.
I will always miss the Beautiful Soul that is/was the essence of Richard Frank.
Love and tears, Martha Leslie

I am one of several first cousins to Richard in the U.K. My father's sister was Richard's mother, known to the family as Connie. We saw him on his last visit here about 4 years ago, but we were pleased that our cousin Betty visited him in February. We all remember him for his gentle manner and dry humour, as well as admiring his obvious talent. He partly inspired our younger daughter Christine to continue her art studies and she achieved her degree in History of Art and Design. At present she is teaching students at the Shanghai University about British Art and Culture. The family are all very sad about Richard's passing at such an early age, and we send our love.

In addition to being an outstanding and thoughtful artist, Richard was a treasure to our community as an art historian and lecturer. He was such a kind man and will be greatly missed. Here is a snapshot of his art at the Palm Beach International Airport.

Richard will live on through his marvelous art. He was a gifted water colorist who's work is to be treasured. Richard was a kind man, entertaining and quirky too....a delight. He will be missed.

Richard was a kindred spirit who was always there to comfort, to support and to celebrate with. Through his art, music and his teaching he has left behind, for all fortunate enough to know him, a legacy of beauty, compassion and fulfillment.

I am upset to hear of the death of Richard. He was important to me and I love his artwork.
