Thomas R. Spradlin
Virginia Beach - Thomas Robert (Bob) Spradlin passed away in Virginia Beach, Virginia on October 19, 2013 at the age of 86 after a long illness with Parkinson's disease. Bob was born in Amherst County, Virginia to James William and Mabel Spradlin and was the youngest of three children. Bob was predeceased by his parents, his brother James W. and his sister Doris Rushton. Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian Shaner, his daughter Debra Arthur and her husband Ken, and his two sons Tom and his wife Estelle, and David and his wife Glenna. He is also survived by two grandsons, Bobby and Billy Spradlin. Also, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Bob graduated from E C Glass High School in 1949 after receiving an Honorable Discharge for his service in the US Navy during World War II and also attended the University of Richmond. Bob retired from C&P Telephone Company of Virginia after 34 years of service. He was a Commercial Engineer and Manager of Forecasting and Development. Bob was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Old Dominion Chapter. He served on many committees including the planning, execution and chairing of several Pioneer Conventions.
Bob and his wife Lillian are Charter Members of Kings Grant Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. In 1985 Bob was recognized by the Church for Outstanding Christian Service for his work with the Church's Baptists Men's Group.
Bob spent many years volunteering with a variety of organizations in the Virginia Beach community since the 1960's. Bob was a Cub Scout Webelos leader, and later became a Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 65 where he enjoyed Scouting for many years with his two sons. Bob was also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America.
Bob coached many youth sports teams including football and baseball teams in the Lynnhaven area of Virginia Beach. In addition to coaching, Bob spent many years working with Boys Baseball of Lynnhaven where he served in many positions over the years including League President in the early 1970's. In 1977, Bob received the Trant Memorial Award for his many years of service with Boys Baseball of Lynnhaven.
The funeral arrangements are being made by H D Oliver Funeral Home, 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. Visitation will be Tuesday morning at Kings Grant Baptist Church, starting at 10am. The Funeral Service will be at Kings Grant Baptist Church, 873 Little Neck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23452, on Tuesday October 22, 2013 at 11AM. Rev. Stanley Wallace officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in his honor, to be made to the church. The burial will be private. Online condolences may be made to the family at hdoliver.com.

Bob was a great neighbor. I'll always appreciate how Bob and Lillian kept an eye out for my Mom as she got older.
