Dr. BENJAMIN BINNS
Dr. Benjamin W. "Benny" Binns, 78, of Portsmouth, died Saturday, April 19, 2014 at his residence. He was born March 1, 1936, in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of Wylie and Lorraine Binns.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Nicola L. Binns; and sons, Phillip B. Binns and Stephen L. Binns.
He is survived by his wife, Marsha Daehler Binns; a sister, Loretta (Jerry) Hillman; two sons, G. Scott Binns and Dr. Steven W. (Nikki) Binns: and four grandchildren, Phillip W. Binns, Audrey (Jared) Matney, Ivy S. Binns and Katherine L. Binns.
Benny was a 1954 graduate of Portsmouth High School, and a 1960 graduate of The Ohio State University in the profession he loved, optometry. His life was filled with optimism like his mother, and like his father, he knew no strangers. He was beloved by his family, friends and those he met. His joy was being in the outdoors, fishing, golfing, and mushroom hunting. Benny and Marsha cherished their winters in Destin, Florida.
He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth, Aurora Lodge No. 48 F. & A.M. in Portsmouth, and Portsmouth Elks Lodge No. 154 B.P.O.E.
A Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Second Presbyterian Church with Rev. Brian Harroff and Pastor Pete Hyde of The Community Church of Santa Rosa Beach officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at F. C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Second Presbyterian Church, 801 Waller Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662.

The "Snow-bird Season" on Tang-O-Mar Beach won't be the same, anymore. Benny out there each day supervising the fishing activities, his own line cast in the surf....excited when ever he hauled one in. And then, the Beach bond fires watching the Sun slowly set in the West - now Benny is there. Hold the Fort till we get there, Friend.

I knew benny as a 12 year old child. We passed papers together. I moved to Florida at 16 and we stayed in touch all these years. He knew everyone in town and was a trip to visit when I came to Portsmouth. His soul was special and he touched everyone he met.
I am sure he is part of the eternal world and will continue his light on the next journey.

Benny had a love for life and living life to its fullest. I met Benny when I was in the 5th grade as his patient. He prescribed my first pair of glasses, cat eyes were the style in 1969 at the bank bldg. I did not have insurance and my family could not afford to pay the money all at once. I had a paper route and he allowed me to make payments for my glasses. I made payments faithfully and he never complained. I was his patient, but he treated me like I was his best friend. I was one of the few patients he kept after retirement and he thanked me when he would come back from Florida to be able to allow him to keep practicing the job he loved. I went to school with Scott and he always kept me updated on what the family was doing. He loved his family and was so proud of his sons and was so in love with Marsha. He made such an impact on my life and on everyone who knew him. I will miss you my friend!
