Mercedes ANDERSON Obituary

ANDERSON, Mercedes E.

Died peacefully at Sunrise Assisted Living in Rocklin, California on Monday, August 26, 2013. She was 84.

Mercy was born in Manila, PI to Javier and Carmen Albareda on April 17, 1929. During her infancy her mother Carmen was divorced and later remarried Walter Mannion, so Mercy was known as Mercedes Mannion when she came to northern California in 1935. In her childhood she lived in the San Francisco Bay area, in the delta town of Courtland and finally in Applegate, a few miles north of Auburn, CA.

Mercy met Robert O. Anderson during her senior year at Placer High School. Bob and Mercy were married two years later on October 16, 1949 in Reno, Nevada.

Mercy spent the next dozen or so years raising her children. Like many women in her generation, she went back to school after her youngest child entered kindergarten. She earned a bachelor's degree and teaching credential from Sacramento State College in the 1960's and then taught in the Roseville City Elementary School District. She went on to teach for 25 years, mainly third and fourth graders at Cirby School, not far from her home in Central Roseville. In retirement Mercy traveled extensively with her husband Bob, who was an avid pilot. She did volunteer work for the Roseville Hospice Thrift Store and read stories to children in Spanish at the Roseville Public Library. She was also a long-time member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary organization of women educators.

Mercy is survived by her children John and wife Hyo of Shalimar, Florida, Rick and wife Suzanne of Roseville, California, and Janet McElroy and husband Fred of Gualala, California. She has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Bob and her son Michael, who died as an infant.

A memorial service will be held at the Lambert Funeral Home at 400 Douglas Boulevard in Roseville at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 20, 2013. A reception will follow at the Anderson home in Roseville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mercy's name to Sutter Care at Home Hospice, 1836 Sierra Gardens Drive Suite 130, Roseville, CA 95661.
