Mimi McCartney Obituary

Mimi McCartney, also known as Mimi Buckstead and Mimi Burns, peacefully passed away Sunday December 4, 2016, after a hard-fought battle with cancer, secure in the love of her only child Nicole (Nikki) Buckstead and her devoted friends. Mimi was born in San Francisco on March 14, 1940, to Mary and George Burns, and raised in Oakland with her younger brother Jack. Many of Mimi's aunts, uncles and cousins lived nearby in the Oakland Hills, creating a large community for Mimi and her brother to play and grow with. She went to Holy Names High School in Oakland, graduating in 1957, and remained steadfast friends for the rest of her life with many of the women she met there. Mimi joined the Flying Tigers shortly after high school, beginning the life of adventure she craved. The Flying Tigers had both cargo and troop transport flights, which she remembered fondly. She married John Buckstead in Sioux Falls South Dakota in 1964. They moved to the Kansas City area in 1965, where their daughter Nikki was born in 1970. In the mid-1970's, Mimi began working for Frontier Airlines, moving to Denver with Nikki. In 1979, they moved to Sacramento. She graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1985, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Behavior. After leaving Frontier, she worked in several local Sacramento businesses, most notably Campbell's Soup. While working for Campbell's, she lived overseas in King's Lynn, England, and Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Mimi retired from Campbell's in 2000. In the early 1990's, she married David McCartney, and moved briefly to Placerville. After they divorced she returned to Sacramento, where she happily remained until she passed away. Mimi loved to travel, embracing new experiences, and enjoyed sharing many of those experiences with her daughter. She traveled to over 50 countries, exploring the world and its people. She was an archivist of her travels, as the many detailed photo albums she compiled attest to. Mimi was passionate about politics, and was a staunch Democrat. She enjoyed books and left a large and varied library as a testament to her eclectic tastes. She embraced all forms of the arts, including movies, music, and theater, and was a great raconteur. She was a devoted mother and friend, and will be missed by many. Mimi is survived by her daughter Nikki, of Huntington Beach CA. Per her wishes, Mimi's remains will be scattered in the San Francisco Bay in a private ceremony, as was her wish. Memorials may be made to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/ or to Planned Parenthood https://www.plannedparenthood.org/, two organizations she felt strongly about.

Mimi, my dear friend. Our friendship lasted much longer than our time at Campbell Soup. I appreciated the visits from you to just sit outside and talk. Thanks for attending my Tupperware parties and keeping me posted on the Campbell Soup gang. I still have the portrait you brought back from Malaysia for me. Written in beautiful calligraphy. Blessed Be to God, in Arabic. It hangs above the door way in my house. By the way, the kimonos don't fit anymore. :-) Rest in Peace my friend!

Mimi is always missed. Went to grammar and high school with her. She had beautiful long braids. Later in life, we shared working together on reunions for both schools. She was smart, funny and great to work with. Hope to see her again in the next life.

Very sorry to learn of Mimi's death. She opened her home to me without question...at a time where such kindness was rarely shown to me. My sympathies to you Nikki. She was a great person.

My friend, I'm so sorry I couldn't reach you. I called but found the number out of service. That's when I suspected something wrong. My feeling was the result from a conversation we had had. I will never forget our visits after our time at Campbell's and the beautiful gifts you brought me from Malaysia. I know you're resting peacefully. Until we meet again.

What more could one ask for than a full life that's a blessing for those who knew her. A true kindred spirit that I will cherish, even as I feel the loss.

Our class of 1957 at Holy Names High School will not be the same without our Mimi. She kept us connected and was so talented. Don't know how we can put together our 60th reunion without her.

I met Mimi when I started with Frontier in 1980. We've remained friends throughout the years and when I lived out of state we always got together for our standing lunch at Crepe Danielle's. A wonderful dear friend all through the years - there was always fun and laughter when we were together. Such great memories and such a big loss in my heart and for Nikki and all Mimi's friends.

Mimi, AKA, mom Buckstead to some of us, was a beautiful soul with a loving heart. I'll always remember the dinners and get togethers she conjured up for Nikki and her friends. I had no family here in California so when she came to the hospital when I had my son, bringing gifts, I was in awe.. She always went out of her way to make everyone feel special. You will be missed by many, but will always remain in my heart.

MiMi was my mom's best friend since they were both 13. The stories she has told me were crazy! They had so much fun and got in so much trouble together. MiMi brought happiness to so many! She spent Easter with all of us shortly after battling cancer. She was still such a joy and never lost her sense of humor! May she Rest In Peace. Blessing to all her friends and family.
