Georgianna Galas Obituary

Dr. Georgianna K. Galas 1928 - 2018 SAN DIEGO Dr. Georgianna K. Galas, who died on November 27, was born in Dover, New Hampshire to Greek immigrants from Mani. She grew up as one of nine brothers and sisters, most of whom worked day and night shifts at Nick's Lunch, her father's restaurant-- before and after school. It was a very hard life, but she enjoyed the discussions at the restaurant. Later, she met her future husband, Dr. James Philip Galas, who sent her to Boston University. After this, she became involved in teaching, and her primarily work was in Alternative Education on the high school level. She became a principal at Garfield Independent Learning Center, Gompers, and Muir.Upon retirement, Galas became president of the State California Retired Teachers Association, which numbered 50,000 persons. She was also president of her local CRTA division for five years, president of Altrusa, and president of Delta Kappa Gamma. One of her happiest moments was as chairman of the Project Linus, which distributed handmade quilts to children who were terminally ill, abused, homeless, housed in convalescent hospitals, and children with AIDS.Her husband, Professor James Galas, died in 2009, and her son, playwright Philip-Dimitri Galas, passed away in 1986. Georgianna is survived by her daughter, Diamanda Galas. Suggested donations are to the California Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc. San Diego XI Division 4, P.O. Georgi had a huge impact on the arc of my life/career... I met Jim and Georgi when a freshman at UCSD and I took a reading improvement class at City College, where my father taught as well. Once I got my teaching credential and was hired by City Schools, Georgi was always supportive. We got to work together at Gompers for a few months....and I eventually was principal at Lewis Middle. and Mission Bay High.... Additionally she was friends with my parents and even brought my Russian mother a balalaika from her travels.
I will always remember her for sage advice, common sense, caring, intellect , and creativity.

I came to know and love Georgi through Altrusa. She was generous with her time and talents and always had a warm welcome when I visited her home. She was a very talented painter as well, and I will always cherish the Yosemite painting she gifted me; I have it hanging on my wall. Georgi was a beautiful, intelligent and sweet woman who will be very missed by many near and far. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. We lost a true gem.

I have fond memories of Georgie as we worked together in Administrative Women in Education. She was a star then and seems to have been an even brighter one in her later years. Condolences to her daughter and her many friends.
