Bob Rothstein Obituary

BOB ROTHSTEIN Bob Rothstein, age 72, beloved husband, father and brother, died July 31, 2017 from complications of Parkinsons Disease. After graduating from UCLA and Boalt Law School at UC Berkeley, Bob came to Santa Fe in 1974 and commenced a long and wonderful legal career as a civil rights and criminal defense lawyer. Bob loved his community, and worked hard to promote fairness and justice. Bob wasn't afraid to take on hard cases, and provided representation to many who otherwise would have been unrepresented. He was a founder and long-time partner in the now multi-state law firm Rothstein Donatelli LLP. Bob married in 1979 and was devoted to his wife Sarah Bennett and children Jacob and Ella Rothstein, and to his many friends, some dating back to kindergarten days. Before the invention of the internet, Bob was the go-to person to obtain information on virtually any subject, particularly rock and roll, geography and sports trivia. Bob is also survived by his sisters Jacqueline Wilson and Harriet Johnson (husband Bob); brothers-in-law John Bennett (wife Sue), Bill Bennett (wife Geri Blake), Charles Bennett (wife Trish) and many nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be at Temple Beth Shalom on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with reception following. In lieu of flowers, Bob would appreciate your contributions to the ACLU, The Southern Poverty Law Center, or to Temple Beth Shalom in Santa Fe. Bob was the best! We all miss him from the old days in Venice, and from law school.

Bob was a great man. He & I were in the same Beit Midrash (Bible study) for many years. He was extremely supportive at my son's Bar Mitzvah at TBS. May your memory always be a blessing, friend.

I love you and am so sad you're gone. We all loved you back in Venice in the late sixties/early seventies. You were a special person. It's a hella loss, knowing you're no longer there. Thanks for helping coordinate those wonderful trips to Death Valley. Those of us who remain think of you warmly.

I knew Bob (We all called him "Rothstein") in Venice, CA 50+ years ago. A bunch of students lived on one side of Brooks Avenue, a bunch of hippies/artists lived on the other, and someone made the breakthrough and melded us into a community. We were all witty and smart and bohemian and adventuresome, and those years were the most fun of any in my life. We did spectacular trips to Death Valley that centered around his van, and we all loved each other. Was it he who promoted liverwurst and peanut butter sandwiches? Four or five of us ended up going to law school, which I think of as the refuge of the smart person who can't figure out anything else to do. I loved him dearly. Had he (and wife and kids) shown up at my door those fifty years later, they would have been welcomed in. I've never met 'em, but they're still welcome! Bob went off to Boalt Hall (now Berkeley Law), I followed a few years later, bit by bit the neighborhood grew up. I'm sorry I missed the rest of his life and glad he kept being wonderful and on the side of justice.

Awww Bob, you'll be so missed. Of all the folk in our little neighborhood band of brothers and sisters back in the early Venice days, you were one of the smartest, finest, funniest and absolutely one of the nicest people I ever met. I treasure the memories of all of us sitting on the stoop in front of 36 Brooks, all in our 20s and just starting out, sunset coming on, lambent salty air, trading stories and jokes to the sounds of rock and roll, debating all the issues of the day.... and your laugh. I keep a postcard you wrote me from the road on your way to Santa Fe in a drawer in my desk to this day. Safe passage, my friend. My deep condolences to Sarah, Jake, and Ella. Bob was the very definition of a mensch and my memories of him will always make me smile.

I worked for the Rothstein Donatelli law firm quite some time ago but remember Bob as a very smart and dedicated attorney (and he was a pretty nice boss, too). I was saddened to hear of his passing. May memories of times together and pride at who he was and what he accomplished in his life console his wife and children at this time of loss.

Bob was an excellent mentor, beginning when I was still in law school. I will always remember his patience, his wit and his tremendous legal mind, which he used in the cause of upholding the civil rights of individuals. He encouraged me to get involved in my community, and modeled how to treat a client with respect and dignity. His legacy is long and lasting. My condolences to Sarah and to the entire family.

Dear Sarah & Family,

I had the greatest opportunity to work and know Bob as a runner for the law firm in High School. He was a wonderful man that treated me with respect and kindness. My deepest sympathy for you loss.

I'm sad to learn of Rob's passing. I knew him when he was part of the Public Defender Dept then located on San Francisco St. He was a vivid, present person and made a favorable impression as a public defender...in the truest sense of that title.

Bob was my legal hero when I started practicing law 33 years ago. Learned far more working as an associate in his firm for three years than I ever learned in law school. He had one of sharpest minds I ever knew and his persistence for fighting for the "little guy" and quest for justice was the inspiration for my law practice the last 30 years. One thing I couldn't emulate was his immaculate organized desk.
He was even a better man. His values, ethics, and progressive way of thinking were unmatched. Could talk to him for hours about music, sports, politics, and current events. Loved starting a softball team with him that lasted for years, no matter how old and slow we got.
So sorry I am out of town and will miss the memorial Sunday but will be there in spirit. Thought are with Sarah, Jake and Ella and the entire Santa Fe legal community.

My heart felt condolences to Sarah and family. I was blessed to have known Bob and Sarah for many years. He had a tremendous wit. Bob and Sarah allowed me/us to have our son in their house, and would have let us have our daughter, but their house was being remodeled. We had lots of fun at their house parties. Lo siento mucho. En paz descanza.

Bob's social justice legacy will continue to have lasting repercussions. We were lucky to have him as a neighbor.

I remember Bob from many years ago when he was a speaker at a legal seminar. I didn't know him well, but I knew he was committed to and a tireless advocate for the downtrodden, the oppressed and the "little guy". He was gracious and took my calls the few times I called him on civil rights issues, which I much appreciated. A superb attorney, a decent, humble and fine person.

Mr. Rothstein taught me how to prepare and prosecute white collar crime cases many years ago in the Navajo Nation Courts. His teaching surley put me in the Arizona State Courts for the past 14 years. I will forever be thankful for his shared expertise.

The Rothstein firm was the finest law firm I ever worked for, and I worked for many in Los Angeles, Phoenix & Santa Fe. Bob set the tone: ethical, dedicated to his clients, kind, and caring. My favorite memory of him: I had been at the firm for only a few months, we were in a HUGE rush to get some papers filed, Bob did all the copying. When I expressed some amazement that he would do so, he explained, patiently but kindly, as if it were no big deal - he couldn't type but he could make copies. No attorney of any firm I had ever worked at had evidenced such willingness to help and think it not remarkable.

I will miss him in life, but he lives large in my memory.

Bob was wonderful man--a mensch--He & I attended a study Torah study group called a Beit Midrash for many years, facilitated by Rabbi Nahum Ward-Lev. Bob was very kind and thoughtful. One would never know that he was an award winning attorney given his humble manner. He attended my son's Bar Mitzvah six years ago & helped me feel so proud of him. I shall miss you, dear friend.
