Robert Dunn Obituary

PORTSMOUTH — Robert Everett Dunn, 65, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth after a three-year battle with lung disease.

He was born Oct. 23, 1942, in Manchester to Alma R. and Delmar S. Dunn. He moved to Meredith and graduated from Inter-Lakes High School in 1960 and the University of New Hampshire in 1964 as an English major. Robert was selected during his high school years to attend special summer class at St. Paul's School in Concord, where he studied botany.

A man of eclectic interests, Robert harvested apples, taught at a private school and protested anything he thought ought rightly be protested.

Mr. Dunn worked for many years at the Portsmouth Athenaeum as "consulting metaphysician."

Robert is survived by his sister, Dorothy D.S. Brown, and brother, Russell A. Dunn, both of Meredith, and several cousins and loving friends.

WE REMEMBER: For about 30 years, Robert had resided in Portsmouth, a city he loved. He was a self-described "penny poet," Portsmouth's second poet laureate.

SERVICES: Services for Robert will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Center Harbor Christian Church, 80 Bean Road, Center Harbor.

i was on a apple crew with Robert years ago in Contoocook NH. A friend in Kittery kept me up on Roberts doings and poetry. So sad to lose him and his lovely lively poetry.

Well, Robert finally kept “his appointment.” I think his only regret about passing would be that he did not have a chance to vote for Obama. He had already put in his absentee ballot request. A few special memories - his delight in planning “a real celebration” at River Run last Veterans Day. He wanted the whole works, wine and all. Along with Gerry Duffy, we three read to a full house and had a wonderful time. And our teatimes - I would arrive to find the TV table set up with tea cups, sugar, cream, napkins and Social Tea Biscuits. I’d warm the tea pot and pick from his Stash collection of exotic teas. I can hear his light lilting voice as our conversations ranged over so many subjects. How often I would forget the time and come out to find yet another parking ticket. I count it a privilege to have known Robert, mentor and dear dear friend.

In the early seventies I counted Bob as a friend, but lost track of him for several years until I finally met him once again this year.
He would have hated the singsong couplets of this little piece, but it, nonetheless, is my sincere tribute.

Bob Dunn 2008
-------------------------
A gentle soul whose anchor was light,
never quite moored to this world and its fight
ever he reached beyond his sight,
refusing to bow to the darkness of night
always he sought for a more fitting place,
never quite willing to be in the race.

Now the apples are picked, and the rope's been untied,
the spinner of words has quietly died,
and carried away on rivers of verse,
he's no longer here in this universe.
The last of his words have been artfully spun.
It's the end of an era -- Dunn's done.

Robert leaves behind many, many friends and a wonderful body of work. All of his poems speak eloquently of the human condition. He will be missed.
