Jay Gregory Dash

Jay Dash Obituary

Jay Gregory DASH Greg Dash, born June 28, 1923, died November 28, 2010 at home after a long illness. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, December 12, 1:30 to 3:30 at Horizon House, 900 University Street, Seattle, in the first floor performance hall. Greg was born in Brooklyn to Emanuel and Shirley Dash. He graduated from CCNY, earned a Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University, and joined the Navy during WWII, where he trained as a radar technician in the Pacific Fleet. In June 1945 when Greg married Joan Zeiger, the rabbi predicted the marriage would not last. The marriage lasted 65 happy years. After the war, the family moved to New Mexico where Greg worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory. One sleepless night in 1960, he wrote a letter to a friend at the University of Washington, which led to a job offer from the UW Physics Department; he was a professor there until retirement. Greg was active in the peace movement during the Vietnam War, and in the successful effort to prevent construction of an ABM base at Fort Lawton. He enjoyed tennis (until his knees gave out), photography, and dinners with family and friends. After retirement, he taught physics in the UW Early Entrance program. He was proud of his young students, especially when they asked tough questions. In addition to Joan, Greg leaves behind children Michael, Tony (wife Dodie), and Liz (husband Jeff); grandchildren Nate and Sam; and Greg's brother Robert. Instead of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in Greg Dash's memory to Horizon House, Attn: Philanthropy Office, 900 University Street, Seattle, WA 98101 or your favorite charity.

Dear Joan and family, I am deeply saddened to learn of Greg's passing. As one of his graduate students, I developed the greatest respect for him as a person as well as a physicist and I have always looked back fondly on those days working with Greg. He will be missed.

Dear Joan and family; I have always admired Greg for his vitality and enthusiastic approach to life; for his wit; his optimism; his high expectations; and his generous vision. Blessings to you and all for such friendship. Silvia Vilches.

Dear Joan, I'm one of Oscar's students, who also benefited from many Greg's advices. One time, my wife and I were invited to a party at your home (beautiful hoouse facing Lake Washington), and my wife was introduced to a magzine called "New Yorker", and she has it ever since, as she reminded me the other day. Please accept our deepest condolences and wish you and the rest of the family the best.

Dear Joan and the Dash family, please accept my sincerest condolences. In late 1985, I was a student in China applying to graduate schools in US. A kind and convincing letter from Prof. Dash led me to UW Physics, and eventually working with Oscar and Greg in their labs. Greg will forever live in my heart.

Dear Joan and all the Dash family,
We wish you all strength and comfort at this difficult time.
Fondly, Henry R. and Dorothy C. Feldman

May your beloved family find comfort during this time of grief. Psalms 68:20 states:" To the Sovereign Lord belong the ways out from death."
