Mary Boas Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Layne BOAS March 10, 1917 ~ February 17, 2010 Born in Prosser, WA, the only child of Felix Layne and Annie Goff, she grew up on a poultry and fruit farm near Monroe, WA. She earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mathematics at the University of Washington in 1938 and 1940, after which she went to Duke University in Durham, NC to do further graduate work and teaching. There she met her future husband, Ralph Philip Boas, Jr., a mathematics instructor; they were married June 12, 1941 in Orleans, MA. She earned a Ph.D. in physics in 1948 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For three decades, she taught physics at DePaul University in Chicago. After her retirement in 1987, she and her husband relocated to the Seattle area, where they spent the rest of their lives; her husband died in 1992. She was active in the Lake Forest Park Garden Club and in 2006 published a third edition of her textbook, Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences. She is survived by her three children, Ralph Layne (wife Sherry), Anne Louise, and Harold Philip (wife Heidemarie), by six grandchildren, and by four great-grandchildren. I was very happy to see Mary at our Feb.Garden Club meeting. I had the opportunity to speak to her that day. As always she had a smile on her face.

I wish to thank Tim for being so kind to his grandmother. She will be missed by all.

My condolences to the family.

I met Mary at the Lake Forest Park Garden Club and it is through that organization that I have known her. When I first met her she was in her eighties and still actively engaged in her profession. She “complained” that the work on the third revision of her textbook was not going as fast as she would like. That third edition of Mathematical Methods in the Physical Sciences was finished, published in 2004, and is currently in use in universities across the US. It is available on Amazon.com, where the reader reviews are mostly raves. The first one listed begins, “To put it quite simply, if you are a physics student, you must own this book..”

Mary was an inspiration to me and many of those around her. She was older than most in the garden club but was among the most technically knowledgeable. She kept the email list for the club and preferred to receive communications electronically.

Mary was a very knowledgeable gardener and gave a presentation to the LFPGC last year on growing amaryllis. She grew tomato starts for the garden club plant sale every year and patiently explained the intricacies of growing them to new gardeners. She was generous with plants and information. She served on the garden club board of directors up until her death and was at the last LFPGC meeting, complete with oxygen tank and just a little help from friends.

We will all miss Mary, her gentle words, and her contributions to our own gardening expertise.

With my sincerest condolences to her family,
Martha Clatterbaugh
