Lynn Votaw Obituary

Lynn R. VOTAW Lynn Robert Votaw passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 after a short time with cancer. Lynn was born in Portland, Oregon to Thelma Berger Votaw and Robert Henry Votaw on June 8, 1942. As a youngster he was active in track and basketball at Hudson's Bay High School. Lynn graduated from Washington State University in 1971 and earned his MFA from the University of Washington in 1978. He was a respected blue collar painter with an outré sense of humor who loved poetry, jazz and fishing. He enjoyed a rich social life, lingering over life's fine pleasures, puttering and making art. Lynn spent the last 18 years of his life with Annemarie Paulman, who passed shortly after, and is survived by his daughter, Angeline Lee, a large extended family and many close friends.

I only discovered Lynn had passed when I tried to find him on facebook today. I knew him from the old Red Robin days and have one of his charming paintings here in my home. So many good memories. Thank you, Lynn.

I have a cherished painting of Lynn's in my dining room. It is a history of Seattle in the 70's; everything in it from postcards to a photo of Eddie Jefferson taken by Preston.....
He was a gentle man and a wonderful human.

I didn't know Lynn but was Annemarie's boyfriend in Junior and Senior High School. The memorial was an amazing dedication to both Lynn and Annie. I was happy to see that Annie had found a person that so mirrored her interests. Our time together as kids was spent at concerts, involved in art of any form, and laughing.

Grateful to have been able to attend the memorial yesterday at which time I was reminded of another memory of Lynn. The time at the studio when he told me he had actual tape recordings of Lawrence Ferlinghetti reading his own poetry. I thought I would never forget that, but I almost did. I didn't find the time to go back and listen to them, but I did think how cool it was to know somebody like that.

This is how I remember Lynn when we went to high school together. I still have one of his early paintings, which his mother and I watched him paint when he was age 16. What a talent!

To have to miss Lynn forever is just a tragedy. But to have known Lynn and his art and his kind and gentle way, was such a pleasure and really fun too. The stories are many. I feel lucky to have some of Lynn's art. I look at it every day over the years. It's beautiful, it makes me smile. That is a huge gift. Thank you Lynn. Rest easy.

I feel honored to have known Lynn since the 60's and to be the proud owner of several of his works. He was not only a terrific, dedicated artist, he was a great friend and will be sorely missed.

Lynn was a unique individual, both physically and artistically beautiful, and will be missed. A few months ago a friend and I were going over the old days and he mentioned a number of people, many of whom I remembered. Lynn was one and I called him as a 'voice from the past'. We spent some quality time at a local establishment, which I am grateful for.

I first met Lynn in 1966, when I visited a buddy of mine who was a student at WSU at the same time as Lynn. I would run into Lynn periodically after that in Seattle (attending my first marriage in 1967 and around town).

I spoke to him a week or so before his passing. He told me he appreciated all the friends & acquaintances reaching out.

My only regret is in not reaching out a lot sooner to reconnect and spend a bit more time with this gentle soul.

Looks like there will be a gathering of friends at the Two Bells on Sunday from 2pm on celebrate Lynn and AnneMaries lives...this is the first of several events and one big family style memorial is being planned for a few weeks out. Putting our collective minds together to make the upcoming memorial a real tribute is important as well as gathering info about Lynn's artwork for a future retrospective. A facebook page and a Blog are in the works.

Kind, gentle, talented, funny - and such a flirt with those beautifiul eyes, his great woolly warmth.
Lynn helped my find the path to my own life when we met in the rolling treeless sea of the Palouse. Then he surprised me on Brooklyn, when he moved next door in '67 with his white rabbit.
He always made me smile. He always will.
Love to Angie, with her legacy of memories and mystery.
Peace to Lynn and Annemarie and all of us who loved them.

Lynn was a year behind me in high school and even though I lost track of him, I never forgot him and still cherish the memories of him. Even back then he was an artistic talent and a friend to all. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I had the pleasure of sharing a house with Lynn the last year both of us lived in Pullman, Washington. I have now the pleasure of seeing daily his fine painting "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Trout" over the piano in our living room. Then too, I've been privileged to get to know at least one of his closest friends better during the all-too-brief days of his illness. May Lynn and Annemarie rest in peace. And may his friends work through their sadness.

I knew Lynn from long ago at the Eastlake Zoo. He was kind, intelligent and funny - the best kind of human being, and I am grateful I could call him friend.

Lynn was a beauty, just a beautiful soul. He had an aura of pure delight that was childlike and magical. It could be over something as simple as a chicken casserole, or an “Aha!” moment of vast complexity. Those blue eyes would sparkle just the same.

You could tell him about your joys, or heartaches, or confusion, or anything, and he wouldn’t judge you or ever betray you. He would often offer advice based on rare perceptions that could only be Lynn’s.

His art made me laugh, made me think , sometimes filled me with awe, and sometimes made me wonder what the hell he was doing! It didn’t matter, his enthusiasm was always more than enough.

We spent times with our little girls playing together, and those are such sterling memories; there are so many memories with Lynn that are treasures. All of us have them, and we’re all so very lucky to have known him.

Lynn knows who wanted to say goodbye and didn’t get the chance, I’m sure. It’s okay. If you knew Lynn, you knew he loved you and that he always would. I know he still goes on loving all of us.

Lynn Votaw was an excellent artist dealing in mental images and formats that made one think. I liked his work a lot and I enjoyed seeing him at openings as he always had time to say hello. His skills were obvious but he was a humble man. He will be missed.

I remember playing at Lynn's house with Angie as a kid. Rambling, bohemian and comfortable.

In particular I loved his painting 'here come the brides' - I think that was the name. Lovely 19th century ladies puking over the side of a boat. When he painted it I was doing elementary school study on Seattle’s history so I knew all about the brides boated over. I felt part of the crowd that got the joke. Hilarious. A moment to savour as a kid, knowing you ‘got’ an adult reference. I also remember it as being quite beautiful.

There were a few artists around in that network of parents friends in the 70’s, but I always loved Lynn’s paintings best. I guess because I associated them with his charm and wit.

Thinking of Angie and all those who loved Lynn. From memory, there were legions.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I talked to Lynn earlier in July and he told me what he was facing, but had anticipated a longer period to address the prognosis of his cancer. Lynn was a very good friend, begining in High School, and thereafter. I have never known anyone that could do with ease what most of us struggled to do. Art, Music, Athletics, Friendships, Scholastics, were all easy for him. A sad ending. My sympathy to family and friends.

As a kid I loved Lynn's painting 'here come the brides' (please someone correct me if I got the title wrong!) showing the lovely 19th century ladies puking over the side of the boat. I think I saw it at the same time we were covering Seattle history in the 5th grade. Hiarious and, from memory, quite beautiful.

A charmer, a talent. Missed.

Lynn lived across the street from me and my family in the Wallingford neighborhood. He was probably the first neighbor we met,it was hard not to notice the eclectic artist with the studio burgeoning with memorabilia.Lynns' longtime dwelling looked like Deluxe Junk co-mingling with Ye Olde Curiosity Shop.Lynn always had time to talk, and I think he laughed every time I saw him.We were sorry to see him move out of Wallingford, and we are very sorry to hear he has moved on once again. I'm sure he is laughing and smiling somewhere. He will be truly missed.

I've know Lynn all my life. I love him so much. Talented artist, great conversationalist and giver of loving smiles. I always have and always will think of Lynn with that kind of love that comes from deep inside -the knowing love that spans over a lifetime with friends and family. Big hug to you Lynn and all who read this.
