Still bless Dr Dienstein when I brush any teeth in the healthy way he recommended. He was a gem!

Continue to remember your kind, caring ways, dear Dr Dienstein. You would be proud of my level of oral health at 88, given the effective little brushing hints you gave me as a permanent gift so long ago. Bless you loving soul. The purple lady---Barbara Meislin

Ben was my teacher, colleague, mentor and friend. He was a little, short, man with a big heart and soul. He was smart, funny and dedicated to his profession. When I was in graduate school he taught us inflammation and the four of us graduatestudents argued with him constantly, but he was always patient and helpful (and right). He was definitely old school and could do more with curettes than most of us could do surgically. His patients adored him and so did his students. He was a proud member (as am I) of the DOPES- the Dirty Old Periodontists Extraordinary Society, and theseven or eight of us would meet quarterly for dinner just to stay in touch and shmooze about the old days. Near the end, Ben was almost deaf. I often sat next to him at dinner so I could talk with him up close. On his 99th birthday we presented him with a medal with a 99 engraved on it and he wore it to every dinner. Our group visited him last year in his retirement home; he could barely see or hear but his mind remained intact and he was cheerful and so appreciative of our visit. After the pandemic shut down in March, I called him and we had a nice conversation; his voice still strong. I will miss him as will everyone who had the good fortune to know him during his long and fruitful life.
