Donald Doyle Obituary

Donald D. Doyle Died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, January 31. Don was the epitome of a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was unfailingly loyal, loving and generous. Don was born on February 6, 1915 in Dinuba, California, the 4th of 10 children. As a young man, Don left the valley for San Francisco where he started in the insurance business selling policies door to door. During World War II, he left the business world to become a Marine drill instructor at Camp Pendleton. Upon his return to civilian life, his work ethic and charismatic personality propelled him into the successful partnership of Cross and Doyle, and then to Marsh McLennan where he was a managing director. He finished his insurance brokerage career as a Senior Vice President at Johnson & Higgins. After leaving insurance, Don became Chief Executive Officer of Bayview Federal Savings and Loan, and later President of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. He continued to be active in the business community and served on numerous boards including Blue Cross, St. Francis Hospital, St. Mary's College, and Langley Porter. He was a long time member of the Masons and its affiliates. While building his reputation in the insurance industry, Don served as the Assemblyman for the 10th District in the California Legislature, where he lobbied for funding of freeways including the section of 680 which now bears his name. He was most proud of his accomplishments in the area of mental illness, co-authoring the Short-Doyle Act which continues to provide funding for mental health services today. Don was lucky in love. He was married to Thelma for nearly 60 years before her death in 2000. Together they were the proud parents of two sons, Donald Jr. (married to Arlene) and David (married to Sheila) and grandparents of Kristine, Patrick and Matthew. Since Thelma's passing, Don was also delighted to become a great grandfather to Aidan and Cameron. For the past 9 years, Don found happiness with his second wife, Helen Humble whose love and companionship filled the last years of his life with joy. Outside of his business and family, Don was an avid outdoorsman. He continued his annual game hunts on horseback into his 90s. Services for Don will be held at Community Presbyterian Church in Danville on Monday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m.. A reception will be held following the services at Round Hill Country Club in Alamo. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento 95817, or the charity of your choice.

I remember Don Doyle telling his own story... of coming to San Francisco with hardly anything. From humble beginnings, he taught everyone he touched that anything is possible. Each of us will miss him in different ways; for his many community services, his accomplishments, I will miss him for his kindness and gentle ways.

A man of exceptional vitality and profound commitment to community. An indelible personality.

His memory continues in many ways but none more significant than the Short Doyle Act, a pioneering effort in Mental Health reform.

Many years ago when giants walked into San Francisco nonprofit board meetings, Mr. Doyle served Independent Colleges of Northern California as Treasurer (and I as office staff). Probably, he filled each officer position, and some more than once. While waiting for him to sign ICNC checks, I would see him neatly clearing his desk behind the glass wall, donning jacket and straightening tie, then opening the door and gravely beckoning to me. We who knew him only slightly were fortunate to have the benefit of his dignified example and thoughtful friendship.

Don was the quintessential gentleman, patriot and businessman of high integrity. The world's leadership barometer has fallen lower with his passing.
