Edwin Callan Obituary

Edwin Culp Callan Son of Charlotte Culp and William Callan, passed away on March 28, 2009 in Palo Alto, CA. He was 88. Edwin is predeceased by his two brothers, William Joseph and John Clinton Callan; and his ex-wife, Georgina Hopkins Callan. Edwin is survived by his two daughters, Candace and Gay Callan; Gay's husband, George Stone; five grandchildren: Halvor Tweto, Chatom Arkin, Michael Arkin, Samuel Arkin, and Georgina Stone; his loving partner, Kingsley Jack; and extended family and many dear friends. Edwin was born in Hooper, CO, on August 30, 1920, but his father's career as a coal mine manager took the family through Clarksville and Waynesboro, PA, in his early childhood, and finally to Steubenville, OH. His father passed away on his first day of attendance at Ohio State, and soon after, in 1939, Charlotte brought Ed and John to San Francisco to live with her sister. Ed graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1942, Edwin was one of 50 Berkeley graduates who entered the Navy Air Corps as the "Flying Golden Bears," and after only four months of training, he began his career as a Navy pilot in the South Pacific. Ed supported the landings at Saipan and was airborne as his carrier was sunk in October 1944; he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals for his service. Edwin married Georgina Hopkins in 1945 in San Francisco, and together they raised Candace and Gay. Ed began his career in finance as a stockbroker after he returned from the war, and in 1957, he joined Mitchum, Jones & Templeton where his numerous duties included consulting and investment performance evaluation. Edwin bought this business from Mitchum, Jones & Templeton and formed Callan Associates, Inc. in 1973; CAI has become the largest consulting firm for public funds and also advises corporations, hospitals, foundations, and money managers. Edwin sat on the National Association of Securities Dealers Advisory Board and was a member of the New York Stock Exchange, where he was also an arbitrator. An avid fisherman, scuba diver, golfer and sailor, Edwin traveled extensively with his friends and family, introducing his grandchildren to these pursuits along the way. San Francisco was, however, very much his home city; he raced the sailboat "Gandy" on the bay from 1955 to 1970, and he always remembered flying in formation beneath the Golden Gate Bridge with three other Grumman torpedo planes. For more than 30 years, Edwin lived on Telegraph hill, always delighting in the fly-by maneuvers that the parrots perform in their own perfect formations. Edwin's personal and professional legacy is one of integrity, loyalty, compassion, invention, humility and service. To be a part of Edwin's family was also to be his friend, and to be a friend of Edwin's was to be a part of his family. Ed will remain a source of joy, humor, and affection for all who knew and loved him. Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at Grace Cathedral on Saturday, April 4th, at 2:00pm. Memorial donations can be made to San Francisco Foundation / Callan Family Fund, 225 Bush Street, Suite 500, San Francisco, CA, 94104.

I enjoyed seeing Mr. Callan arrive every morning at Callan Associates Inc. the seventeen years that I was employed there. What a joy it was to see his wonderful smile and feel his kind hearted presence. He will truly be missed and always remembered. My prayers go out to his entire family.

It was always a joy to sit next to Ed during lunch at the club table in the Pacific Union Club and chat about our adventures past and present. The train he donated, that so joyfully goes round and round the Christmas tree will always keep that happy spirit alive. Rusty Miller

Nan and I are so saddened by Ed's passing. We had many wonderful hours of laughter and joy with him on and off the golf course, at the Callan Conference and with him at the Ronald McDonald House in Palo Alto. Ed has left a void never to be filled. We send our prayers and thoughts to all of his family and his colleagues who love him so dearly.

My deepest sympathy to Ed's family.
My wife and I met Ed at the Pulmonary clinic this last year. It was funny how may times our path's had crossed over the years from his days as a Navy pilot to the San Francisco Golf club to the clinic. We enjoyed our conversations with ed immensley. He will be greatly missed.

I have many great memories of Ed when I was but a kid. One time, when I had my drivers license for about a month, he asked me to drive his car and tow his boat down from Tahoe. As expected, a police officer felt I wasn't driving up to standards and pulled me over. Mr. Callan said to stay right where I was. He'd go talk to the officer and work things out. And work it out, he did. When he got back in the car, he roared with laughter for 10 minutes and then told me he was going to take a nap! He was always such a positive and respectful man...and treated everyone with dignity, no matter their age. My love goes out to Gay and Candice at this difficult time.

Ed was one of my mentors in this great industry of investment management. He was also one of my best 'scuba' buddies having shared the beauty of Aldabbra and the Red Sea. But mostly Ed was as we say in the military the person you want in the foxhole with you. He'll protect you with his life as you would him. And in the end that is the best performance measurement of this wonderful and without peer man. I'll truly miss walking this earth with him.

Uncle Ed was one of my Dad's best friends and my godfather. What you don't see in the posted picture (which was of a group aircraft carrier pilots) was that Ed had his right thumb stuck in my Dad's right ear, with his other fingers splayed out. That great sense of humor so typified his nature. Indeed he will be remembered by many and for a long time.
