Horace Enea Obituary

Horace Enea June 5, 1941 - February 4, 2009 Horace was born in Antioch, CA, and raised in Pittsburg, proud son of Frances and Joe the "Milkman" Enea. Before there was Google, there was Horace Enea. Horace had an answer for every question, especially if it was about jazz, rare books, astronomy or computer science. An avid musician, Horace was president of the Leland J. Stanford University Marching Band the year they went from flat to fluffy. He met his wife, Anne, at Stanford when she hired him with grant funds to write a computer program; he liked to tease her that she paid him $500 and spent the other $1000 on her wedding dress. At the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Department, Horace and Dr. Kenneth Colby developed the natural language program Perry. Horace later founded Heuristics, Inc., the first microprocessor-based speech recognition company, and then co-founded the venture capital group at Apple Computer. In 1996, he helped raise money for BEA Systems, Inc., the fastest growing software company in history at that time. Horace is survived by his wife Anne; his children Kristine and John; his grandchildren Jason and Nicholas; his brother Joe and Joe's wife Francine. Friends and family are invited to a Funeral Liturgy on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, 10 a.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 3200 Harbor Street, Pittsburg, CA 94565. A Rosary will he held the night before, Tuesday, February 10, 2009, 7:00 pm at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel, 2295 Railroad Avenue, Pittsburg, CA 94565 Donations may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, 801 Roeder Road, Ste 400, Silver Spring, MD 20910, www.PHAssociation.org/donate.

Horace, your mentoring and inclusion into many of our endeavors have stuck with me for years - I sincerely thank you. I loved our donut lunches - they provided a gastronomic awakening and a restaurant grading system that I still use. I had hoped to have found you earlier so that you and my wife Laura could have met. You are always in my heart.

Today, in reading about you, you became not one of my best childhood friend's dad, but the man, Horace Enea...your brilliance, your interests, your creativity, your sweet, romantic side has made you a much fuller and richer man that just my friend's dad. I met your family when I was about six years old, and today, I feel like I finally met you. My heart breaks that your family is without you and that I really did know so little about you, but I know somewhere, the song continues on. May God keep you forever in His Hands.

Horace and Anne were among our first friends when we moved to the San Jose area. What a surprise to discover that we had done business with Horace's company, Heuristic's, when we were still in the US government. We will miss Horace, and send our condolences to his family.

Sonny,

I will miss our visits and talks. I learned so much from you and enjoyed sharing your passions for language, books, science, computing, music, gourmet cooking, and so much more.

I enjoyed discussing our wives, sisters Ann and Carolyn. They both came out looking great for putting up with the two of us when we shared time in Mexico looking at the bay, talking, and reading while they took care of feeding us.

The 33 years since I became part of your family will be remembered with fondness and love,

Your brother-in-law, Bob
