Jean Reyes Obituary

Jean Worth Reyes

Nov. 1st, 1923-Apr. 5th, 2013

Jeanie Reyes passed away surrounded by her loving family in Kaiser Hospital Oakland. She was 89.

She is survived by her sister Joan Anthony, sons Charles, James, Robert and John Worth and their wives, grandchildren Katie, Daniel and Autumn and great granddaughters Sigrid and Luciana.

She was born in Portland, OR to James and Maxine Godfrey Loop, but she was a lifelong resident of the SF East Bay Area, living in Berkeley for the last 40 years. While raising four sons in the '60s, she earned a Baccalaureate degree (Social Welfare, SFSU) and a Masters degree (Psychology, SSU). She was a licensed therapist (MFCC).

Jeanie worked her whole professional life as a counselor in the fields of substance abuse and eating disorders. She became well known throughout the recovery community for sharing her experience, strength and hope. She found great joy in the relationships brought to her in this way. She died having been sober in AA for over 45 years and was a lifelong advocate for the healing power of the 12 Steps. She had an infectious positive attitude and an intense faith in the power of personal improvement.

She also was known for her community activism and her work with providing services for the homeless. She had a strong sense of personal responsibility toward both the people in her life and the greater community. She gave herself, and what she had, to many good causes close to her heart. Jeanie was a lifelong lover of books-a reader of many genres-and a strong supporter of education.

She was a wonderful mother and a doting grandmother and great grandmother. She loved and was cherished by countless friends, a group that included people of all ages and many walks of life.

A memorial service will be held for Jeanie Reyes on Sunday May 5th at 11:00 AM in The Brazilian Room in Tilden Park

I recall my early days of sobriety (1979-and early
80s) when Jeanie was the beacon that lighted the way for so many of us women in the Berkeley fellowship. I treasure her always.
