Leo H. Riegler was born in Vienna, Austria and fled that country with his mother on April 27, 1939 on a kindertransport to England. He lived in London before being enrolled in a boarding school in Kent. Shortly after World War II broke out, the school was evacuated to Shropshire. In 1940, during the Blitz in London, then later that year, an agricultural settlement for European refugees was established in Soúa, Dominican Republic. At age 15, he was the youngest to sign up. The group sailed without incident on the S.S. Cameronia without convoy across the Atlantic Ocean, however during the following crossing, the ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. During his 6-1/2 years in the Dominican Republic, Leo worked many jobs, his favorite working with livestock, herding cattle, and breaking horses. At the settlements, he befriended a Dominican security guard named Antonio Imbert, who many years later headed a small group that assassinated the Dictator RafaelTrujillo and became a national hero, a General, and provisional President. In 1947, Leo signed on as a crew member on a Danish freighter that sailed all over the world. In 1948, he arrived in Oakland from the Orient on a Norwegian freighter. He was offered a ride to San Francisco in the back of a laundry truck. Over the years, he held many jobs and worked at the Fairmont Hotel, White House Department Store, Granat Bros. Jewellers, and the Emporium. During the Korean conflict, he was drafted into the Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. When he divulged that he was in the United States illegally, he was honorably discharged and given a deadline to leave the country. He left for England, and returned legally six months later. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

After Leo being gone now these 5 years, I remember him as vividly as ever. He was an excellent business partner, and as a friend we shared many experiences together. Thanks largely to him Vesuvio continues to thrive, and memories of him at the bar will always be with me. Ron Fein, CEO Vesuvio

Earlier today I got a call from my sister, Sandi, to tell me that my Cousin Leo had passed away this past November. I live in North Carolina now but I was born and raised in Mountain View. Leo was a relative on my mother's side of the family. She and her parents also left Vienna as refugees around the same time Leo did. I remember Leo used to drive down to see us in our home in Mountain View in his Maserati. I used to stay with him in North Beach during summer vacations when I was a young kid for a week here and there and hanging out at the Coffee Gallery and Vesuvio's. Leo introduced me to Shirley Temples and taught me how to play (what else) Liar's Dice! Elli, Sandi and I had lunch with you and Leo in SF a few years ago when I was out for a visit. I'm sorry I hadn't stayed in better contact and wish I learned of Leo's passing before now. Elli, it seems that you were close to Leo and took care of his final arrangements. If you have any information you can share with me about Leo's last few months I can be contacted at [email protected].

Leo is my great uncle. He was a man of style, and he lived one hell of a life. He had a practical intelligence that couldn't help but command respect. Whenever I would go to see him, I would nervously wonder whether my plan in life at that moment made sense because I didn't want to disappoint him. He was generous and fun loving, but he didn't suffer fools. He was a great person to have in my life because he kept me honest while also always being supportive. I can't make it to his funeral today, so my friends and I are going to do our own celebration at a local bar in his honor. To Leo.

Just heard today from my old friend Detlef Eymer that Leo passed away. I knew Leo since 1974 when I came to San Francisco as a young immigrant from Germany! I met him at Vesuvios and right away he was speaking German to me! Made me feel like home! Taught me how to play liars dice! Almost won the annual tournament, but lost to Ron Fein RIP in the final! Gave me lots of advice how to survive in North Beach! Loved him! Just today onNew Year's Eve called up Detlef to wish him a happy New Year, and he gave me the sad news! RIP my old friend!

I used to work on Montgomery St across from Melvin Belli's office at Redwood Bank. I'd often go for a beer in the mid 80s after lunch at various North Beach bars, Vesuvio Cafe being my number one bar. I met Leo, he'd let me win a game or two of dice and then crush me. This didn't keep up for so long once I found that he was just toying with me. I'd still try to outfox him on occasion just for kicks, but it usually didn't end well. I remember after finding out about him operating (& owning I think?) the Coffee Gallery asking him who his favorite performer that he ever booked was. He didn't think for a second and responded 'Duke Ellington'. An iconic San Francisco / North Beach figure if there ever was one.

Thank you Ellie for posting the pictures. Leo was my Mom's first husband-and my Dad's best friend (go figure!) I have memories of him both as a child and from when I moved back to San Francisco at age 24. Warmest regards to you. Kimery Wiltshire

Ellie, I send my deepest condolences to you, Leo's family and his extended family. I will always be grateful for Leo's mentorship and friendship. I met him on my first days in North Beach. Leo recommended me for a job at Vesuvio in 1979 after seeing me day after day opening the Coffee Gallery as he passed by on his way to work. I miss his wit and his charm and will always be inspired by his love of travel and meeting new people. He leaves a great legacy in North Beach and among the many people he loved and helped through the years. May he rest in peace.
