Martin Quist Obituary

Martin P. Quist Martin passed away peacefully in Portland, Oregon, on April 1st, at the age of 90. He was the beloved husband of Sylvia Quist, to whom he was married for over 63 years. Born the son of Danish immigrants in San Francisco on October 11, 1919, he was a graduate of Lick-Wilmerding High School, studied mining engineering at the University of Nevada, and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. While training in Nebraska in 1945, he met Sylvia Kugler of Crete, Nebraska. They were married on May 18, 1946 in Omaha, after his serving a year on Guam. Martin had a long career as an analytical chemist and consultant to the metals, mining, jewelry, and electronics industries, first as Chief Chemist for Abbott A. Hanks, Inc., and later as owner of Metallurgical Laboratories, Inc., both of San Francisco . He was a long-time member of the AIME. Martin is survived by his wife Sylvia, his son James (Bonnie) of Orinda, California, and his daughters Ann Quist (James Hudock) of Orlando, Florida and Janet (Craig) Schweitzer of Portland, Oregon, and grandchildren Emily, Hilary, and Molly Quist, and Liana and Kurt Schweitzer. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Ane Marie Quist, his sister Norma Herger, all of San Francisco, and his brother, George Quist, of Woodside, California. Interment is at Cypress Lawn Cemetery, Colma, California.
