Frank Doyle Obituary

Franklin Arthur Doyle Known in San Francisco comedy circles as Frank Kidder, passed away peacefully Dec. 20, 2012 at age 70. A comedian, producer, and teacher, he may be best known for creating the San Francisco International Comedy Competition.
Frank was born Nov. 18, 1942, in Cambridge, Mass. to James and Freda Doyle and grew up near Cape Cod. A near-fatal car accident forced early retirement from the U.S. Air Force. Inspired to use laughter to heal himself, Frank started using comedy as therapy.
In January 1970, Frank met Hilda Kidder at a writer's workshop. Frank married Hilda 17 June, 1970 and took Hilda's name as his stage name. Frank told Hilda his intent in life was "to somehow create a venue where young people could try out and develop their comedy acts." He did that, bringing an energetic comedy scene to San Francisco. Many talented comedians passed through workshops and competitions and went on to great success. In 2005 the 'Godfather of Comedy' was honored with the Comedy Legend Award at Comedy Day in Golden Gate Park.
Frank is survived by wife Hilda, brother Richard, and numerous friends. The family thanks the staffs at the SF VA ICU, Eden Valley ICU, and all Frank's visitors. A celebration of Frank's life will be held at Il Pirata on Jan. 15 from 2 to 5PM. All are welcome.

What we feel inside is more important than any words we can express. We'll miss you, Frank!

Although I have photos and videos of my time on stage with Frank and being coached and trained BY Frank on numerous occasions, I unfortunately don't know how to put them on here... I guess you could call me a DINOSAUR. I also have a scrapbook with the articles and flyers from the graduation showcases from the classes Frnak produced that I starred in (I guess you could call it that)!!!

Frank, Hilda and I formed a wonderful friendship, along with other wonderful comics I met through his "COMEDY AS THERA-TRAININGS" (among various names of his classes).

As most of you know, his students were among some of the top names in comedy today - and I'm sure if someone goes through the tons of video footage that he had stored in his apartment, one could find a treasure-trove of history and hysterical laughter!

Frank taught IMPROV - he taught the techniques of IMPROV, he was very strict sometimes.. "FREEZE IN PLACE, HELAINE"... you can hear him say on one of the videos. I still watch those videos... I never get tired of watching them.

Frank gave me a chance, and he was also a character. He goofed on me when he was on stage and I would say:
"ELVIS IS DEAD, FRANK.... so now he looks like Charles Manson!!!"

Once Robin Williams came into the Holy City Zoo and also made mention of Frank looking like Charles Manson as well...

I am sorry I am in New York and have Tuesday booked up, or I would have loved to have been there at the memorial/celebration. I'm sad and on the other hand, I bet there will be laughter (as therapy) there, which according to the obituary, was Frank's wish for all his students!
