SOUTH BEND - Ruth W. Maxwell, 96, of South Bend passed away on April 30, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cora and Ode Wilborn; three sisters; four brothers; former husband, Harry Holloway; Leonard (Bill) Maxwell, her husband of forty-six years; and her daughter, Judy Holloway Mitchell.

She is survived by two nephews, Cary J. Humphrey of Las Vegas, NV and Gary W. Taylor (Patricia) of Louisville, KY; several great-nieces and nephews by marriage; and step-grandsons, Adam Schnakenberg (Tracie) of Chicago, IL and Allen Mitchell (Mia) of Elkhart, IN.

Ruth came to this area from Summer Shade, KY in 1941. She graduated from Thomas Commercial School in South Bend. She worked in credit stores, insurance companies, and First Source Bank, and retired after 27 years of service at Bendix (Honeywell).

She had a wide range of interests and hobbies over the years including horseback riding, dancing, traveling to several countries in Europe, to Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Hawaii, and most of the contiguous states. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, clowning for the Avalon Grotto Auxiliary, and playing cards, especially Euchre. She was also a member of Moose Lodge #57. Ruth was a Christian by faith and became a member of Union Baptist Church in Nobob, KY.

She will be remembered for her sense of humor, compassion, caregiving during her daughter's long battle with cancer, and the standards she expected for herself and others. A grandson affectionately nicknamed her “Mrs. Clean”.

The family would like to thank all of the friends, doctors, nurses, and hospitals for being so kind and helpful to her during years of sickness.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 3 in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Committal services and entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, and from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.
