Walter Edgerton Obituary
Age 79, of Elmira Heights, NY, died on April 23, 2008 after an extended illness at St. Joseph Hospital, Elmira, NY. Visiting hours will be held in the Chapel of Blessed Michael the Archangel in Grace Episcopal Church, 375 W. Church St., Elmira on Saturday, April 26, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. followed by a Requiem Mass at 1 p.m. The Reverend Father Donald W. Matthews Celebrant. Full Military Honors will be accorded prior to the Mass. Interment of Skip's ashes will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery Elmira at the convenience of the family. The family will provide flowers; those wishing may make memorials to Grace Episcopal Church Memorial Fund. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Lloyd Edgerton; children, Mark Edgerton of Clearwater, FL, Lisa Edgerton (Eric) Rice of Elmira Heights, NY; PA; grandchildren, Brian and Steven Edgerton of Clearwater, FL, Kathryn, Jesse, and Meagan Rice of Elmira Heights, NY; brother, James (Mary Jane) Edgerton of Mansfield; brothers-in-law, Richard (Maralyn) Lloyd of Muncy, PA, Gordon Lloyd of Elko, NV, Benjamin Lloyd of Horseheads, NY, Jeff Lloyd of Cuba, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Skip was predeceased by his parents, Ellsworth and Sarah Stevens Edgerton; brother, John D. Edgerton; nephew, Jeffrey Edgerton. Skip graduated from Mansfield, PA High School in 1946. Served from 1948 to 1952 in the United States Coast Guard. He graduated from Mansfield University in 1954 and Elmira College in 1969. Skip taught in the Campbell, NY, Mansfield, PA, Elmira Heights, Horseheads School District before completing his career as the Principal of the former Junior High West in the Horseheads Central School District in 1984. Skip was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church where he served in several capacities. A member of the Horseheads Elks, Retired Lions Clubs and a past Master of the Mansfield Masonic Lodge. He loved to golf and was a longtime member of the Corning Country Club. Mostly, Skip loved his church, friends, and family. ARRANGMENTS BY BAKER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME.

Aunt Linda and family,
I was so sorry to hear of Uncle Skip's passing. I know your last weeks were very difficult and I am personally sorry for losing a friend who always enjoyed a good laugh and good time together with family. To Walter's Family-I always called him Walter from our days teaching summer school at the former EFA to our days at HHS where he taught Social Studies and I guided. Then you passed us by and became a principal at West. We missed you then and we will miss you now. God Bless. Charlie Millard

Linda, Walt was a friend to all who knew him, I had him at TAE and later got to work with him when I was part of the Horseheads police dept. I played golf with him as a member of the retired lions. Our prayers and thoughts are withyou and your family.

We are deeply saddened to read of the passing of your beloved Skip. He was our friend, mentor and excellent principal at Jr. High West. His compassion and sense of humor made us want to work hard for him. Our faculty was like one big happy family full of love and laughter. Mrs. Edgerton, I'm so sorry for your loss. Mr. Edgerton was a great inspiration to me at T.A.E. Although I'm sure that I probably gave him ulcers during B'Ball seasons, he always had that special way of handling things. He was a special man and will surely be missed by Barbara and myself. I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Edgerton's passing. My "other" dad...I remember when I was younger, I would run up to him at Jr. High West and calling him Dad. What a wonderful man and a great principal. I was lucky enough to be at West during his leadership.

Mr. Edgerton was both my Health and Driver Education teacher at T.A.E. many years ago. He always made class fun with his little jokes, but made sure we learned well too.

My deepest sympathies to you on your loss of Mr. Edgerton. He is an excellent man and his smile and laugh will always live with me. Our family joke of him being our "other" father was always a great time to be part of it. Still to this day, I can see him in the halls of Junoir High West saying " Adam Smith, go write a book." Walt was a fantastic administrator, and I spent the best years of my career with him at the helm. I am sure that my colleagues concur with me that he made Junior High West a school of which we could be proud, and because of him, we became a family. He will be greatly missed!
