Helen-Jo HEWITT Obituary

HEWITT, Helen-Jo Jakusz "HJ" Helen-Jo (HJ) Jakusz Hewitt passed away at the age of 90 in Austin, TX, on November 26, 2017. She is survived by her devoted caregiver, Maria Castillo, and by friends and colleagues who remember her fondly as a strong, opinionated and set-in-her-ways woman who cherished the memories of her research and study period in New Zealand as a Fulbright Scholar, cared deeply about nature and the environment, and was devoted to the spoken and written word.

Born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana, HJ earned a BA in English and Speech from the State University of Iowa, an MS in Speech Pathology and Linguistics from Purdue University, and a PhD in Foreign Language Education with specializations in Linguistics and Folklore from the University of Texas at Austin, where she matriculated as a Ford Foundation Fellow. To augment her 1972 PhD, HJ also pursued a Master's degree in Library Science. While the ambition of her younger years was to become an opera singer, HJ began her professional career as teacher and speech therapist, and devoted the bulk of her academic career to the study of language and historical linguistics, working as a librarian, linguist, lexicographer, bibliographer, and editor at the University of Texas at Austin's Linguistics Research Center. She also spent eighteen months as an Information Specialist for the CYC Common Sense Knowledge Base Project at the Artificial Intelligence Lab of the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC). Among her publications are bibliographic articles on the linguistics of Australasia and Oceania (late 1960s); the paper "FANTASTICATS: Fabulous Felines from Science Fiction and Fantasy" (1970s); the report "Linguistic Documentation of METAL System" (1978, documentation of the third-generation machine translation system designated METAL, Mechanical Translation and Analysis of Languages, with Lehmann, Pflueger, and Amsler); the paper "Computers, Bibliography, and Foreign Language Typography" (1985); the book Language Typology 1988: Typological Models in the Service of Reconstruction (with Lehmann, 1988); and the book Biblical Hebrew: An Analytical Introduction (1999, with Lehman and Raizen).

Ferociously independent, HJ insisted on remaining in her own living environment, and indeed spent all but the last week of her life in her own apartment, surrounded by her beloved science-fiction book collection, seashells, plants, and Maori native art pieces. Among her documents, her friends found the following poem, attributed to Jan Struther and copied in HJ's beautiful hand:

One day my life will end; and lest
Some whim should prompt you to review it,
Let her who knows the subject best
Tell you the shortest way to do it:
Then say, "Here lies one doubly blest."
Say, "She was happy." Say, "She knew it."

HJ chose to be cremated. A memorial gathering will be organized by her colleagues and friends. For information contact [email protected].

I don't think Helen-Jo ever knew what a huge influence she was in my life. I only really knew her for a couple of years as a Work/Study student at the LRC, but I did do misc. work for her in her Mac Putty-colored apartment on Pearl St. Her love of fonts was contagious. Her Star Wars collection was amazing. Her sci-fi collection was astounding. Her Fem-Pro slant influences me to this day, and helped me be a better mother. She had recommended "Shards of Honor" to me at the tender age of 19 or so, and to do this day, almost 30 years later, I re-read that book at least twice a year. I went back to see her once after college, with my baby girl in tow, twenty years ago. That was the last time I really talked with her, but I thought of her often, and looked for her online every couple of years. I am so sad I never got to tell her "thank you".

Helen-Jo and my mom (Nina) s friendship began before I was born 53 + years ago.

She was always loyal to my mother, sending TV recordings that had anything to do with my mother's native country of Brazil up until my mother's cognitive decline.

Helen-Jo, was a role model for STRONG women.

Let me share a couple of female role model stories:

My first memory would be of her giving me 15 Susan B Anthony dollars for my 15th birthday in 1979 , the year the coin first was minted.

My last contact/ memory of her is best shared by including part of her last email to me in 2014:

In case you are puzzled by the package this is that statue of Joan of Arc I told you about at our last meeting. How, to me, your father's pet name for you seemed to be "Baba Jeanne", so Jeanne d'Arc seemed appropriate when choosing a Baptismal name for you. (Of course, my also being a Jeanne could also be a factor.) Religious plaster statues are a dime a dozen, but NOT of Jeanne's. So when I saw this one for sale in a bookstore back in the late 50's, I craved it. But, couldn't justify purchasing it. At which, my best friend got it for me as a present. So it's doubly cherished.

This was followed by a detailed medic alert necklace recommendation for my mom.

Thank you for being a loyal friend to my mom Teresinha ( Nina) Quadros Toosi, who only a year younger than you also joined God's light 10 days before .
