Kelly Fearing Obituary

Kelly Fearing Kelly Fearing, a maverick of Texas modernist art who taught generations of artists during his four decades at the University of Texas, died Sunday, the 13th of March, of congestive heart failure at his home in West Lake Hills at the age of 92. He was born in Fordyce, Arkansas to George David Fearing and Frankie Kelly Fearing on the 18th of October, 1918. After graduation high school, he studied art at Louisiana Tech University, then later at Columbia University, from which he received his master's degree. From 1945-1947, he taught at Texas Wesleyan College. In 1947 he started his long term career at the University of Texas in the Department of Art and Art History, where he retired as professor emeritus in 1987. After his retirement, he continued to work as a professional artist. Fearing's work from his Fort Worth years is abstract, surrealistic and filled with allegory - all characteristics that would remain in his work over the decades. Dickson Reeder, a Fort Worth artist who worked for the same contractor, introduced Fearing to area artists and they became the center of the swirl of avant garde printers and painters. This group -- who introduced modernist ideas to Texas art -- later became known as the Fort Worth Circle, in which Kelly is one of the last artist of this group. More than 80 of his prints and drawings are in the Blanton Museum of Art's permanent collection. He was an inspiration to students, fellow professors, and fellow artists. He is survived by his nephew, Charles Smith of Dallas, Smith's wife, Gaylon, and their three children. The family would also like to thank the caregivers, Deborah, Sherry, Wiesye and Millisa for their loving care and dedicated support. Those who would like to honor Kelly Fearing can make contributions to the Kelly Fearing Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Art. For more information about making a gift, please contact Andrea Keene at (512) 471.9270 or email her at [email protected] Contributions may be mailed to: The University of Texas at Austin, College of Fine Arts, Attn: Kelly Fearing Endowed Presidential Scholarship, 1 University Station D1400, Austin, Texas 78712-0340. A memorial celebration is planned for Saturday, the 23rd of April 2011 from five o'clock in the evening until seven o'clock in the evening at the Laguna Gloria Art Museum, 3809 West 35th Street, Austin. I was a student of Kelly back in the day. Over the years, I have enjoyed a drawing he gave me. It reflects not only his talent but also his sense of humor and his kindness. He was one of those special creative teachers that will always be remembered by his UT students.

I did not know Mr. Fearing myself, but my mother met him a couple of times while he was a student at Louisiana Tech, where she was an instructor. Mother said she had his sister as a student. Mother purchased a painting of his at an art show at school and he came by her office a few days later, wanting to know what about that picture made her want it. She told him what she liked about the painting, but she thought it was a bit overpriced (I think she told me it was $15.00.) He told her that one day she would be proud to own a Kelly Fearing original. Mother passed a way about nine years ago and now I own it, and I am proud to do so and to tell this story about it. What do I like about the picture? I just like it, that's all. I guess the biggest part of that is that it is in the background of almost all of our family photos over the years, so looking at it brings up happy memories of my family. I am sorry for your loss, but he did bring joy to many.

The best teacher and friend anyone could have. I was so lucky to have him as my teacher and mentor in both undergraduate and graduate school. Thank you Kelly for your wisdom, friendship and kind heart and soul - you made me a better artist, teacher and human being because of your presence in my life.

Kelly was part of our pleasure during the years Ben and I lived in Austin.Having a Fearing painting on the wall was a status symbol!Memories of him and Austin art circles make Austin come alive again.

I benefited personally from Kelly's work in promoting the arts. In the 1960s he created The Saturday Morning Art Project at The University of Texas which gave me as well as countless other Austin high school students the chance to advance our artistic development. I will be ever grateful for the rich environment he nourished.

Kelly was a lovely man with immense talent and incredible spirit who gave so much more than he took. The twinkle in his eyes and his mischievous sense of humor made for many good times. He was a wonderful friend for forty years, and I loved him. If there is a Heaven, Kelly and Judy Maxwell are there painting together. Godspeed the dear gentle soul of Kelly Fearing.

God Bless You Kelly! My mother who is 83 asked me to post this message. She knew Kelly for many years when her mother (Julia Fischer) owned the first health food store in Austin (The Health Kitchen, on 6th St). Kelly would come in and spend time talking with my grandmother, who was blind. He was so kind to her and my mom wanted his family to know how much she appreciated him for being so good to her mom. Mom also treasures an oil piece Kelly painted for her. She was severely injured in an auto accident and Kelly gave her a beautiful painting of an owl (he knew she had an owl collection). Our family is very sorry to hear of his passing. He was a lovely soul and we are better for having known him!

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I am thankful to have known Kelly. I appreciated the way he taught and encouraged us as young artists. I am especially grateful for Kelly's visionary creation, The Saturday Morning Art Project' at The University of Texas. In the 1960s and 70s it gave countless numbers of Austin's high school kids the opportunity to advance their artistic development. It put my art growth on hyper drive. Later, while a college art student at U.T., I took classes under Kelly. His lessons and insights are with me to this day.
Thank you, Kelly, for enriching my life and that of our community.
