Ann Godsey Obituary

Ann Elizabeth Godsey Ann Elizabeth Godsey, age 93, of Cedar Park, Texas passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2012. She was born in Temple, Texas on October 26, 1919 to Ernest B. and Ruth A. Powers. She lived in Temple, Texas before attending college at what is now Sul Ross State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. Ann married Joseph Daughety Godsey on August 26, 1940. When Joe preceded her in death on February 15, 2007 they had been married 67 years. Ann was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas and was previously a member of Highland Park Baptist Church in Austin where she and Joe lived for 21 years. Joe was in the service and as a military wife Ann and her family moved more than 25 times. As a result she and Joe lived all over the world, making many lasting friendships along the way. She was an expert seamstress, knitter, crocheter and artist and while living in Austin she shared her love of handwork by teaching sewing and knitting at the International Student Ministry of Highland Park Baptist Church. One of her greatest joys was the ability to do for others and she was always happy to provide her beautiful handwork to others. Ann is survived by her only sister, Ruth Ernestine Powers Godsey, Greenville, Texas; her children, Joseph Daughety Godsey, Jr., Florida; Ernest Eugene Godsey and his wife Linda, Point Venture, Texas; and Betty L. Godsey Reynolds, Austin, Texas. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. They all knew her as Mama Jo. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Porter Loring. Graveside service Wednesday January 9, 2013 1:30 p.m. Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Arrangements with Porter Loring Mortuary. 1101 McCullough Ave. (210) 227-8221 You are invited to sign The guestbook at www.porterloring.com

Another of the Saints of the Thomas family gone on to her reward. I'm sure there was a family reunion when she got to heaven! She was always so thoughtful of Grandma Esther which we all appreciated. What a legacy she leaves--and a challenge for the rest of us to continue her good works.

One of the first people our family got to know when we moved to Austin to serve at Highland Park Baptist Church was Ann Godsey. Ann and Joe let us live in their home for 3 weeks while we searched for a house to buy, and we were treated like beloved guests. Ann and Joe had just gotten a VCR which had just come on the market. They had purchased "The Sound of Music" as one of their first videos. Kara was almost 4. She watched it with Joe every day for 3 weeks straight. Ann made Kara a beautiful pink dress for Easter which I still have in the closet. Kara now has a 5 month old daughter of her own and I plan to pass it down to Kathryn. Every year when we decorate our Christmas tree, we pull out ornaments that Ann made for us. She sent us a birthday card faithfully for many years. Ann was a person who wanted to be of service, and so many of us were the recipients of all of that love and care. She is family to us. God Bless you, Ann!

Ann Godsey was one of the great and influential women of my life. I give thanks for her every Christmas as I hang ornaments on the tree made by her over 30 years ago. She and Joe were an amazing pair. They took us in and nurtured us during our first weeks and months of ministry in Austin. Ann loved God, her country, her family, her church, and the Aggies (not necessarily in that order).

Celebrating the wonderful life of St. Ann! She was such an inspiration to those of us who had the joy of knowing her. I served as her church secretary for 8 years at HPBC. At Church of the Savior, we are still blessed weekly by the beautiful banner on our wall that she made and gave to Joe Phelps on COTS' very first Sunday in 1985: "The Glory of God is Humanity Fully Alive!" Thanks be to God for Ann Godsey!
