Dr. Newton began his career when he started his own printing business, The Bibliophile Press, out of his parents' home in 1930 when he was just 13 years old. The young Earle printed cards, letterheads, and pamphlets. He continued to operate his press during the summers while he was a student at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Amherst's poet-in-residence, Robert Frost, was very interested in his student's printing career. Frost offered Newton the opportunity to print the first separate edition of his poem, "The Gold Hesperidee". Earle's mother, herself an accomplished artist, illustrated the cover and a friend and best man at Earle's wedding, Charles Miller, designed the text cut. The publisher's copy of the poem is inscribed, "To Earle Newton, my best wishes in his next undertaking as a publisher, Robert Frost".
Dr. Newton founded two magazines, Vermont Life and American Heritage in the late 1940s. Over his long and distinguished career, Dr. Newton was Director of Historical Research for Webster Publishing Company in St. Louis, Director of the Vermont Historical Society, Director of Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts, Director of the Institute on Historical and Archival Management at Radcliff-Harvard Universities, Director of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Museums and Historic Properties and Director of the Museum of Art, Science and Industry in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Executive Director of the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board, Director General of the National Quadicentennial Commission, President of St. Augustine Restoration, Inc., Acting Director of Libraries at Flagler College, St. Augustine, Executive Director of the Pensacola Historical Restoration and Preservation Commission, Acting Chancellor of Mark Hopkins College, Brattleboro, Vermont, Executive Director of the Richmondtown Restoration, Long Island, Adjunct Professor of Humanities and Honorary Fellow at Norwich University, Vermont, Director of the Museum of the Americas, Vermont and donor of and consultant to the Earle W. Newton Center for British American Studies, Savannah School for Art and Design, Savannah.
Conferred honors and awards include The Queen of England's honor of Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003 for his large donation of British and American artwork to Savannah School of Art and Design, Savannah, Georgia and his lifelong desire to promote "anglo-american" culture ( www.scad.edu/newton); Knight Commander of the Order of Isabella la Catolica, Spain presented in 1965 for Dr. Newton's work in the restoration of St. Augustine during the 1960s; American Institute of Graphic Arts' Editorial Award for the years 1950, 1951 and 1952; Special Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History in 1949.

Dear Josephine and Toni,
I can't quite express how fortunate we are to have had an ever so brief opportunity to know Dr. Newton. He was a remarkable man with an uncanny sense of history and its relevance in the contemporary world. His legacy will live large with all that come into contact with the results of his work.
On behalf of the entire St. Mary's College of Maryland community, our sincere sympathy.

On behalf of the Proctor Library of Flagler College, I wish to convey our sympathy to the family of Dr. Earle Newton. Dr. Newton was always a friend of libraries, and Flagler College was clearly a beneficiary. As his obituary notes, Dr. Newton served as Acting Director of the Flagler College Library in the earliest years of the College. And more recently he donated a good portion of his collection of books on Spanish America to the Library. The students of Flagler College will continue to share in his legacy, and all appreciate Dr. Newton's contribution to learning.

Dear Jo and Toni:
My family and I send our deepest condolances on the loss of our dear friend Earle. We always marveled at the close friendship he had with us but most especially with my father and (after their marriage) my mother. He was my first mentor and certainly encouraged my pursuit of a museum career. However, on a more personal level, it was the decades-long friendship we all had that was, and remains, so important. Earle had a more than interesting life as a historic preservation leader. I was privileged to be involved in some of this as a high school and college student. In many respects he was the last of the individual leaders in our profession.
We send our prayers to you all in this time of loss.

Earle was an important part of my life and career. Arriving as I did, a young art dealer from the sanctuary of London strait into a Vermont night that was utterly black, and deep in snow, I proceeded to have an extraordinary experience that combined warm hospitality with the encounter of his remarkable collection of portraits that filled an adjoining clapboard church. Earl's life work and that of his charming wife have left a permanent imprint. Our love and sympathy to Toni

Dr. Newton was a friend and mentor to me. I learned a lot from him, but realize that I barely scratched the surface of his vast knowledge of history and art. It was an honor and pleasure to have been associated with him, and he will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. The newspaper biography showed clearly what a great contributor Earle was to the fields of arts and history. The honors he received are tribute to those contributions. The art collection he donated will be a lasting tribute to his memory. With much love to Jo and Toni. Mary and Greg O’Brien
