Matthew Mayer Obituary

Mayer, Matthew Kirchoff Died on September 6, 2017, at the age of 53. Beloved husband of Sarah J. Mayer; step-father of Adam Hotaling and Julia Hotaling; son of Matthew Francis Mayer and Victoria Kirchoff Mayer Altvater (Roger); brother of Tomea Mayer Mersmann (Ken); son-in-law of Barry and Anita New; grandson of Tomea and John Kirchoff and Matthew and Winifred Mayer; and brother-in-law, step-brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to many. Matt (Kirk) was born in St. Louis, Missouri and attended St. Louis Priory School; earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; an Executive Master's in Business Administration from Washington University; and was a proud graduate of the National Defense University in McLean, Virginia. He started at McDonnell Douglas Corporation immediately following his college graduation, which soon became The Boeing Company. Matt spent his 30 plus year career traveling the world on behalf of Boeing and was most recently a Director in the Training Systems and Government Services division of Boeing Defense Space and Services. During his career he worked in various defense related aircraft programs supporting all branches of the U.S. Military. Matt was blessed to meet his wife Sarah, who is also an executive at Boeing, while they worked together on the F/A-18 program. Matt was best known for his love of classic cars, technology; and, most importantly, his wife Sarah. His interests and collections were widely varied and we will miss his keen intellect, integrity, and humor. Throughout his illness he showed an amazing strength of spirit and unfailing appreciation for all those who helped him. Matt's family is very grateful to the wonderful and compassionate care he received from the doctors, nurses, and staff in oncology at Missouri Baptist Hospital, particularly in his final days. His mother and sister are most grateful to Sarah Mayer for her amazing love, devotion and full-time care of Matt throughout his illness. Services: Interment will be private, and the family will receive friends to celebrate Matt's life at a reception in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to LaunchCode, 4811 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108, or to a charity of your choice.

My condolences to you at this difficult time. I met Matt when he came to Phila to talk to me for a position on the FCS UAVS team. He immediately made me feel at ease and I knew right away the kind of person he was - intelligent, caring, humble, funny, and genuine. May his smile and spirit continue to bring you happiness and peace.

I am so sorry you have lost such a wonderful man. I knew Matt best when we were young, single McDonnell Douglas teammates all going out together after work. He was such a great guy. I know you will miss him so much. Cancer takes too many too soon. Prayers for all of you, I know he will always be with you.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember the first time I met Matt. I was fairly new to the program and was apprehensive prior to meeting him for the first time. He greeted me with a warm smile, immediately made me feel at ease and was just so down to earth. He was kind and genuine and he will be missed.

I am deeply saddened and shocked by Matt's passing. I was a friend of Matt's from Cornell. We spent a lot of time, laughing, hanging out, and playing Star Trek games which I'm sure were Matt's. Hopefully his memories will continue to bring joy to all of you who remember him.

What a great Man! Learned so much from him during our FCS days. A true gem that will be missed, but he will live on in the kindness, knowledge and management skills he imparted on all that worked with him.
