Paul Burgett Obituary

Burgett, Paul J. Rochester: Paul J. Burgett, Vice President & University Dean Emeritus, University of Rochester, passed away on August 22nd, 2018 in Rochester, New York at the age of 72. Paul is survived by the love of his life, Catherine (Kay) G. Valentine, Professor Emerita, Nazareth College of Rochester. Together and lovingly, they traveled the globe with zest and passion. No place was off-limits. Their love of travel over several decades brought them closer together and opened them up to new possibilities. A central element of their joint life was the special delight they found in big city art, film, music and theatre, soaking it up wherever and whenever possible. Theirs was also a rich, shared intellectual life in which they explored the ins and outs, ups and downs of teaching and writing. They had the good fortune to co-write and present papers at scholarly conferences in the U.S. and abroad and to entertain an array of audiences locally with their insights into contemporary Greek culture. Many of the core themes in Kay and Paul's life are captured by how it all began-two young instructors at Nazareth College brought together to facilitate an intense, daylong workshop on sexism in the college setting. He is also survived by his brother, Peter Burgett, and sisters, Lettie Burgett (Benjamin Cowan), Mary Burgett Lacom (Wolfgang), Maggie Burgett (Kimble Smith), Cathy Burgett (Jerry Lyman); many friends, colleagues, former students, and relatives around the world. Paul is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Ruth Burgett of St. Louis, Missouri. Paul earned BM, MA, and PhD degrees from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. His doctoral dissertation treated the aesthetics of the music of Black Americans, a subject that occupied him over 40 years as a teacher and scholar. He served the University of Rochester in several positions including as Vice President and Senior Advisor to the President, Vice President and General Secretary, Vice President and University Dean of Students; Dean of Students, Eastman School of Music. Prior to his University service, he was Assistant Professor of Music at Nazareth College of Rochester; Executive Director, Hochstein Memorial Music School, and a music teacher in the Greece Central School District. As a faculty member in the music department of the University of Rochester?s College of Arts and Science, he taught courses in the History of Jazz, the Music of Black Americans, and music appreciation, and he was academic advisor to freshmen and sophomores and adviser to several student organizations. His community service activities included Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Strong Museum, Chair of Rochester's Zoning Board of Appeals; over the years, he also served on the boards of directors of the Genesee Country Village and Museum, the Hillside Family of Agencies, the Arts and Cultural Council of Rochester, the YMCA, the United Way, the Urban League, the Hochstein Memorial Music School, the International Advisory Board of the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College Chicago, the Mt. Hope Family Center Advisory Board, the Rochester Rotary Club, and the George Eastman House Museum. He served six years in the 98th Division U.S. Army Reserve Band, Rochester NY, and was honorably discharged in 1975. In 2016, the University of Rochester named the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center to honor Paul's commitment to social justice at the University and globally. He was a tireless advocate for the Gateways Music Festival, a multi day series of concerts, performances, and other events featuring classical musicians of African descent. At the time of his death he was chair of the Gateways Board of Directors. Services: A private burial service and a private memorial service will be held at a future date. Donations in Paul's memory can be made to the Gateways Music Festival in Association with the Eastman School of Music. To Paul's family - my deepest sympathy. I am so sorry for your loss, but I hope precious memories will carry you through this sad time. I grew up with the Burgett family and those of us who grew up on Cabanne Place know what a magical place it was to live. And in reading about Paul's life, it appears he kept the magic in his life. Hugs and kisses to Peter, Lettie, Mary, Maggie, and Cathy and to Paul's wife Catherine.

I've read a lot of tributes in recent days to Paul's professional labors at the U of R, and I daresay that all the praises of his abilities and achievements are richly merited. But I remember Paul once saying to me that, as he got older, the people he valued most, both at work and outside it, were not necessarily those who were great at their jobs but rather those who were good human beings--by which I think he meant people marked by kindness, good humor, and integrity. So, judging Paul by his own criteria, I'd have to say: looking back over my 66 years, I can hardly think of anyone I've met who is a better human being. He and Kay and I were colleagues at Nazareth when we were near the beginnings of our respective careers, and I was proud to call them my friends--a feeling that remains strong despite the scant contact we've had in recent years. I knew them when they first bonded, and I'll say now what I said then: he thought that she was terrific, she thought that he was terrific, and both of them were right. That they were so well matched surely makes Kay's loss that much harder to bear, and my sympathies go out to her from the depths of my heart.

My dear Paul Burgett...Music is well said to be the speech of angels; in fact, nothing among the utterances allowed to man is felt to be so divine. It brings us near to the infinite.- Thomas Carlyle

Paul is fondly remembered from my days as a student at the Universiry of Rochester in the early 70's, and later when I served as a member of the Trustees Council. His gregarious nature warmed the campus and his infectious personality affected all who knew him. Paul poured his soul into his efforts to bring harmony between discordant groups and ideologies. My heart and prayer's are with Paul's family.

I did not know Paul personally when we were students together at SLUH; but I went to SLUH band concerts and heard his good music!! He was one of a few black students at SLUH at that time; but I respected and appreciated his musical talent, plus he was really smart!! I did not tell him that, but I say it now and say it proud!!! I have lived in Buffalo, NY, since 1993 and was unaware that Paul was just down the Thruway from me, an hour away!!! I truly regret that I did not meet up with him in Rochester; I would have traveled to see him!! I send my sympathy to his wife and family!!!

Paul Burgett was (it pains me to use the past tense...) an astonishing, vivifying presence at the Eastman School of Music when I first arrived there in 1975. Most treasurable, perhaps, were the years when he served as Dean of Students there. Many of us went into a kind of mourning when he left for the River Campus to teach and to serve in the University administration. But he seemed to remember each of us, very specifically and fondly, when we would bump into him at a concert or in the JCC. I feel lucky to have known him. Warm regards to Kay and family members.

I was fortunate to work under Dr Burgett at the UR and interact later at the JCC where I worked and he was a member. Dr Burgett and Kay were always kind and thoughtful, always ready for an intelligent conversation and to tell of their recent trips all over the world. My condolences to Kay and the family, he will be missed.

Paul was such a wonderful person and friend. I didn't know he was ill, so this news comes as a terrible shock. Paul's good sense of humour made him such fun to be with. His accomplishments were truly impressive. I will miss him even though I wasn't fortunate enough to see him often.

Please accept my sincere condolences, Kay. You have been a wonderful, loving couple.
