James Leon Gilchrist, 80, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015.
Memorial services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, August 28, 2015 at Bethel A.M.E. Church.
Leon leaves to cherish his memories, grandson, Jai Leon Gilchrist II, daughter-in-law, (Ret.) Chief Petty Officer Sandra D. Doyle-Gilchrist, both of Murrieta, CA; best friend, Sylvia D. Williams, of Tallahassee, FL; foster granddaughter, Chassidy Youngblood, Atlanta, GA; goddaughter, Lesley Myrick, Marianna, FL and a host of other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southern Scholarship Foundation, 322 Stadium Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32304, (850) 222-3833.

Continue to rest easy Dad. Your grandson Naval Aviator Lt. Jai Leon Gilchrist II is currently stationed in Whidbey Island Washington State with Squadron VP-47.
He has been in for 5.5 years now.
I can imagine how proud you all are of him, he's an Amazing young man. I am so very Proud of him.

Sorry to just learn of Captain Gilchrist's passing last August. From 1959 to 61, Mr. Gilchrist was our Navigations Officer and flight crew member on Crew 4 and later crew 11 in Patrol Squadron Eight. I last Leon at our VP8 Alumni Reunion in Pensacola in 2003. He was a fine man, modest and caring and respected and an inspiration to all who knew him.

I met Leon Gilchrist through our Rotary Club of Tallahassee. Although I did not have the opportunity to spend a great deal of time with him, I was greatly impressed by his strength of character and wisdom. He was a model of the Rotary concept of Service Above Self. Donald Parks

James Gilchrist is a remarkable man who truly loved the kids. Today was difficult for me at Fairview Middle School, however i was able to carry the baton well. Mr. Gilchrist often reminded me and the boys that "If the house is to be set in order, one cannot begin with the present; he must begin with the past." John Hope Franklin...we will miss you Pops!!!!

I knew Capt Gilchrist as my Commanding Officer when attending FSU. He always represented the Navy and military in the most professional way and as I knew him through the years following our naval service, he continued to be a consummate professional. He will be sorely missed.

Leon Gilchrist was an incredible human being. He had such a warm personality, gentle heart, and was quite a gentleman. I am indeed blessed to have had the opportunity to be in his presence. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and best friend Sylvia. You all will be in my prayers. Leon was a gem.

Mr. Gilley,as we would affectionally call him, will be missed tremendously.
